This book is about Mr. Erwin's vacation. He visits several National parks where he parks his car and with a very heavy backpack, walks a couple miles to a designated camp site, sets up his tent, goes to sleep, wakes up, "tears down" camp, walks back to his car and drives to the next stop.The book is poorly edited which made it difficult for me to read. Little things, like he says he can't see things far away because he is "farsighted." He does have a few mildly interesting experiences but I wouldn't think enough to write a book about.I appreciate the time and effort Mr. Erwin put into writing this story, and I hope it is a success for him.
Planning my own very similar solo road trip out West from Michigan for late May 2017, my chance encounter with this book was a godsend of awesome advice at the perfect time and so enjoyable it was like listening to stories from one of my backpacking buddies around the campfire. Having visited Great Smokey Mountains NP in late March 2017, the beginning of the book was easy to relate to and laugh along with. But it was the rest of the chapters I am so grateful for. Based on the suggestions here, I'll be deviating south to visit Grand Teton NP and Jackson Hole with a stop at Thermopolis Hot Springs on the way before continuing north to Yellowstone and Glacier NPs. Thanks for an excellent bedtime read over the past three nights and sharing these experiences. Prayers for no bears (or aggressive coyotes).
I was really hoping for more adventures out of this book, comedic encounters, something.... Really, it just sounded like an ordinary camping trip that any of us would have with minimal if any interesting adventures. Further, I wouldn't call much of it adventures in the wilderness, but really very accessible standard campsites in national parks. Perhaps it is the author's experience level. I figured he would be gone on long cross country adventures with all kinds of stories, but really it was a couple of major national parks where there were probably more tourists than locals. For me, it was a miss....
Having been to all the areas identified, this was a nice read to put myself back there in beautiful park land. Lucky for him that he had worked in the parks before. Might never have made that shower.
Book sounds like a really good read. My family and I travel all over in our camper van and I thought this would be a great book for my husband as this is something he longs to do! However, the narrative is very scrambled and not incredibly cohesive in its storytelling. Overall, it is ok, but better books out there for the adventure enthusiast without a plan.
Lost with Directions is one of the best books I have ever read! Once I started, I was unable to put it down until the end! Mr. Erwin's recount of his adventures across America will make you want to put on your hiking boots and leave your ho hum day to day life and have an adventure of your own. Not only is the story wildly funny, he includes many facts about the places he visited and wildlife he encountered with such detail that you feel as if you are along for the adventure! I highly recommend this book to anyone.
This book was excellent. Such a transparent tale of the trials and tribulations associated with unknown adventure. The comical banter amongst friends interlaced with beautiful descriptions of the surrounding environment is sure to capture the attention of anybody looking to get lost in the wilderness from the comfort of their home. Can't wait for his next book!
Everyone in our family got lots of laughs and smiles from this! We live near Yellowstone & can really relate- a fun quick read worth passing around.
