Wow, this book has so much Revelation. I also purchased the audio book. At I heard the Audio Book on the Religious Spirit I was driving on the highway I had to find a place stop. Mr. Bogle was the founder of The Vanguard Group and is famous for creating the world’s first index mutual fund in 1975, the Vanguard 500 Index Fund.The logic of his index fund was to invest in a large number of stocks, all the stocks comprising the S&P 500, to make money from the combination of their growth and dividends. This is a departure from the more common view of investing in undervalued stocks to make money from an increase in their stock value.Bogle makes a convincing argument that the best way to get the value from the stock market is to invest in all the stocks by buying mutual funds based on indexes of the market that invest in all the stocks.The author points out that the real net income from stock investments is the investments’ gain minus the cost of the investments. The costs are relatively easy to determine in the case of retail brokers charging for a stock trade when buying or selling stocks. However, the costs are much more complicated for mutual funds because, in addition to the cost of the trade, in many cases there is an annual incentive sales fee for the broker for up to five years (up to 1.5% a year according to the author). I had no idea that there were hidden sales fees in addition to the purchase fee charged by the brokers. In addition to annual fees, most mutual funds typically have additional management fees of 2 to 3%. In comparison, index funds have low management fees (often .4% or lower) with no hidden sales fees.What is more disturbing is that 99% of mutual funds significantly underperform the S&P 500 index. When the excessive costs combined with the underperformance of mutual funds are compared to S&P index funds, the long term income differences are shocking. The net return after taxes of $10,000 invested in an indexed fund from 1980 to 2005 would have been $76,200 versus $16,700 for other mutual funds (for those mutual funds that survived). This represents 456% more net income to the investor with far less risk.If you are one of the 85% of investors who let their broker "manage" their assets, Bogle’s book may keep you awake at night. To sleep better, I switched to low cost, low risk index funds.The author’s perspective is unique since he invented the very first indexed funds. It is a little like reading Thomas Edison's thoughts about the light bulb. Bogle knows the issues and history of investing in indexes versus other types of mutual funds.This "common sense investing" book was easy to read and easy to understand. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting their investments to produce more income with less risk. Five Stars and hats off to the founder of index investing.

This book was an awesome read to a new-comer in the scene of investing. I'm not sophisticated in finance. Nor am I wanting to become too knowledgeable in this topic. I just needed to understand the basic to plunge in and invest in an easy, simple portfolio. But doing so takes a whole lot more understanding than just following a simple portfolio recipe. To make my simple portfolio, I dived into Mr Bogle's book. He explained how things work in the finance world, at least enough for me to feel confident about the decisions I'm now making in the finance department. I would recommend this to any beginner investor seeking more knowledge in the field of finance.

Great Book for the basics of investing with a strong focus on Index Funds. I suggest this be read by employees of firms that gave them limited info on their 401K. All the basics are here in this book. I have been invested for 12 years in Index funds. There have been up and downs but overall I am way ahead.

Good, quick read with great information for anyone who is trying to make sense of personal finance and basic investments. Everyone should read this in their 20s before filling out the paperwork for their first workplace 401K. If you read this one book you'll know enough to invest sensibly for retirement without getting ripped off by financial product salespeople, and you'll understand more about investing than 85% of the general population.

SO helpful. I went over this book with my money manager, and no surprise, he had all this BS to say about how Bogle is wrong. Needless to say, I fired the money manager. Investing has always seemed mysterious, which is what they want you to think! With this and a few other books, I feel just competent enough to do it myself (with a little help from friends and the Bogle website).

Such a great book for a confused investing noob. Got me up to speed in understanding why passive index fund investing is the only worry free long term strategy that consistenly wins, and why active trading always returns to the mean. I finally consolidated my retirement account and opened a vanguard account to move my assets into. Thanks John Bogle!

Mr. Bogle makes a solid argument repeatedly, by approaching the same question from multiple directions and supporting it with unimpeachable numbers. It reinforced some views that I had already developed on my own, but also clued me in to the adverse effects over time of high expense ratios and transaction costs.When I finished the book I liquidated a stock that pays a decent dividend but seems to have little growth potential, and a mutual fund that has excessive costs that I had overlooked. I put the money in a low-cost S&P 500 index fund that already made up a significant part of my portfolio.I agree with other reviewers who have criticized the book as repetitive, but it's worth reading for its style, wit, and clarity.

Well written and easy to read. Many of the claims are probably true and I certainly wish the H1B quota goes down and IT jobs would be more stable and income levels would go up. Nothing against most of the argumentation. But she has enough good stuff and does not need to add artificial arguments like:Job creation per immigrant1. The only thing she looks at is that a jobs are created by the founder of a company, which is certainly a short sighted conclusion. A well rounded team is required to create the next job, i.e. engineers need to create the next good product, the sales team has to sell the stuff and so on. I think the role of CEOs and founders is certainly overrated in the assessment (and in America anyway).2. It is hard to start a company it requires capital or other support. An immigrant is often alone, especially if you look at the ones who are brought based on their work. The families (i.e. brothers, sisters, parents, grandparents) often stay in the home country. Often parents are willing to help you out when you start a company for example by giving you a room in their house for an office for free, or lending you some money to get started. Also they can give you back your old room for shelter if your business does not generate a living wage in the beginning. In addition to this if you grew up here you also have a nice network from school and college, which a fresh immigrant has to build up first. (Remember Mark Zuckerberg got his first 3 million from a buddy of his not from some VP).Been there done that : I started a consulting firm in my home country where I could immediately call about 200 friends , family members, extended family members friends of friends etc. Here I could take with maybe 20 people to start with, every new contact had be generated.H1B to Greencard transitionOne of the really funny arguments is that you should know when you come if you want to stay forever (i.e. greencard) or only for a short period (i.e. H1B) so she does not like the transition from H1B to greencard.Who and how in the world can someone go to a new country, which he may have visited only for vacation before and then know that he wants to stay there forever ???? Usually during the 3 years of H1B people start to like (or hate) the US and want to stay (or leave). She may be one of those rare individuals why can make such a life changing decision 'up front' without trying for couple of years.So anyway the book has enough very good arguments and does not need any of the bad ones to add to the mix. Leave the 'made up' arguments out and the book would still have enough material.

Pretty good book. Contains historical background on how the H-1B and other visa programs developed, who is behind them, and who in Congress has advocated for them. Both Republican and Democrats have advocated for these visa programs. Ms. Maulkin even included a list of the current presidential candidates who do and don't advocate for these programs. Unfortunately, the biggest opponents seem to have dropped out.I wish the book had covered two additional topics;1) complicity by US based state engineering colleges in the H-1B program in filling their schools with as many foreign graduate students as possible to create staffing positions and cheap labor for research studies. Additionally, the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 prohibits universities receiving any form of federal aid from charging foreign students more than in-state tuition. Students from other states typically pay much higher out-of-state tuition than foreign students at state universities because of this federal law. The state taxpayers are compelled to subsidize foreign students. Universities also participate in promoting the fiction of shortages to maintain their graduate programs and research. I am particularly upset that the universities do not tell their American undergraduate students that there is a huge surplus of engineers, and employers may decide to hire a foreign PhD for less than an American graduate with a B.S. Engineering students often believe the myth of a shortage and spend years working hard to get a degree that is not in demand.2) the TN visa program for NAFTA professionals, " Visas for Canadian and Mexican NAFTA Professional Workers " and the TD visa for their spouse and dependent children. This seems to be unlimited in numbers (?), usually requiring only a baccalaureate degree or some sort of certification. Like the H-1B, the TN NAFTA visa ties the employee to a sponsor employer. The TN NAFTA visa lists a large number of professions, in addition to computer systems analysts, engineers, chemists, and biologists, it includes hotel manager, nutritionist, agronomist, poultry specialist. physical therapist, graphic designer, interior designer, librarian, social worker, urban planner, meteorologist, and many other professions. Does anyone know how many TN visas are being issued?

This 2018 edition includes a nice selection of color photographs in addition to Fodor's famous ratings of what to see, where to eat, and where to stay. Montreal and Quebec City stay crowded with visitors year-round (Quebec's famous winter carnival, anyone?). Planning ahead is the best way to be assured of accommodation and an exciting visit. Fodor's Montreal & Quebec City has lots of recommendations, lots of small maps and diagrams for navigation, and practical information for visiting Canada. There is even a tear-out plastic map in the back that fits in a back pocket or purse for exploring. The two cities and this guide are well recommended.

I am traveling in March and this guide is geared for those who are traveling in the summer. I've found more year-round advice online. Quebec has a great interactive website.

The book was a great guide for hotels, inns, restaurants, sights, other important travel info, and the map very helpful for pre-trip planning and walking while there. (I only visited the Old City of Quebec so cannot speak to Montreal).

Comprehensive coverage of Montreal and Quebec City. A pull-out map of Montreal is included, as well as local maps scattered throughout the book. I like having a book to read for a general overview. It is easier than looking for individual web sites when planning a vacation.

I bought this for Quebec City. It is ok. A little hard to follow and not as much info as I would have liked. Plus a few things weren't as described (maybe things have changed since publishing).I would recommend instead the old Quebec walking tours book. It was fantastic.

It's always good to be prepared for a trip to a new destination, and this guide has been most helpful with preliminary information to prepare us for our travels. I'm sure it will be actively used as our travel guide once we arrive, pointing us in good directions for everything we want to see and do.

It guided me on the major attractions. Some entries were inaccurate and I ended up inconvenienced several times on my trip, as far as when things would be open. I prefer the Lonely Planet series.

Good book, with great maps and up to date descriptions.
