A Q&A with Jonathan L. Howard Question: You’ve been working on Johannes Cabal in its various iterations for many years now, how did it feel spending so much time with such nefarious characters? Jonathan L. Howard: It’s something of a cliché to say that villains are more interesting than heroes, nor is it even very true, so I shan’t be trotting that particular phrase out. I would suggest that it is the inner life of the character that makes them interesting, and that is true of the virtuous as much as the vile. Cabal does some rather horrible things, it is true, but he never does them purely to give himself the opportunity to curl his waxed moustache—he’s clean-shaven, for one thing—and declaim his wickedness. He always has a reason, and it’s usually a good one. I find fictional villains who are evil because they are evil unengaging. Cabal, on the other hand, has motivations and drives that most can sympathise with, even if the actions he commits based on those drives can be loathsome. For him, the ends always justify the means, and damn the consequences. Question: The carnival in your book is used as a device for collecting souls; was there a real life inspiration for the carnival? Do you find there to be something generally sinister about carnivals? Jonathan L. Howard: There’s no real life inspiration for the carnival, really, but plenty in fiction. The obvious inspiration was Bradbury’s Something Wicked This Way Comes, which is a deserved classic. I liked the Disney film version, too, and dearly wish that its original incarnation as a screenplay in the fifties produced by Gene Kelly—Gene Kelly!—had come to fruition. Something Wicked’s Cooger & Dark’s Carnival wasn’t the first threatening carnival in fiction, and it certainly wasn’t the last, but it is probably the best. It was the persnickety question of where such a carnival might come from and how anybody would end up as a proprietor that inspired my novel. As for how sinister they are, that is to an extent a fictional conceit on my part too. You have to bear in mind that carnivals like that are unknown in the United Kingdom, and I haven’t heard of the traditional British travelling fair being transported by train either. The Cabal stories take place in a slightly blurry world where things come together because they aesthetically appeal to me, and not because they’re historically accurate; a magical realism of sorts. I wanted an American-style carnival travelling by train, and that’s what I got. That said, there are plenty of permanent fairgrounds around the country, and they tended to have a slightly creepy air about them. The real Ghost Trains in Blackpool and Porthcawl, for example, inspired the exterior of the Ghost Train in the novel. Question: In addition to writing you work as a video game designer, how does that work compare to the experience of writing fiction? Are there any surprising similarities? Jonathan L. Howard: There are definite similarities, but I wouldn’t say that they are surprising. The games I’ve worked on tend to have definite narratives, so it’s exactly the same process of inspiration, development, pacing, and polishing. The main difference is that a novel can have significant sequences in which physically little happens, which is considered heretical in games. In fairness, there’s good reason for that—the player wants to be involved, and there isn’t a great deal of opportunity for that in a scene consisting of two people talking over a cup of tea. That’s not to say it hasn’t been attempted, and pretty successfully. I remember a game a few years ago based on the stories of Edgar Allan Poe. It hit all its target, being very atmospheric, true to its source, even thought provoking, and all without Pit and the Pendulum platformer or Fall of the House of Usher first person shooter sections. In commercial terms, however, it was never going to be the next Tomb Raider. Question: Have you always been a fan or horror and supernatural lore? When did this sort of thing first capture your imagination? Jonathan L. Howard: Yes, I’ve always enjoyed the grotesque and the macabre, right from an early age. I recall that I somehow saw Dana Andrews being chased around the woods by a fireball in Night of the Demon when I was about four or five, and being fascinated. I grew up on a diet of black and white Doctor Who, The Avengers, snatched glimpses of the first few minutes of Out of the Unknown episodes before being sent to bed, and any number of slightly disturbing imports like The Tinderbox and The Singing, Ringing Tree. I remember that I got a book for Christmas sometime in the very early seventies called Stranger Than People, which was basically a young person’s guide to Fortean phenomena, interspersed with stories like "The Yellow Monster of Sundra Strait," and Poe’s "Metzengerstein." I loved that book; I read it so many times that the cover fell off. Question: What sort of research did you do for the book? Was there anything you came across in the process that really surprised you? Jonathan L. Howard: I actually did very little research for it; it was mostly lurking in my mind already. I can remember little necessary for day to day living, but if you ask me the birth name of Dr. Crippen’s wife, I can tell you off the top of my head. I needed a bit of nomenclature for something or other in the running of a carnival, which a librarian friend found for me, but that was the only real piece of research for it. Even things like the Grand Conjuration to summon a demon—which is an authentic ritual, you may be horrified to hear—was in a book I already had. I have a large collection of books on assorted esoterica to the extent that my wife, a bibliophile herself, rolls her eyes and says, “Not more bloody books?” whenever I come home with a bookshop bag and a sheepish expression. Question: There is a lot of paperwork in your version of Hell. Did you hold an especially bureaucratic job somewhere before working as a game designer? Jonathan L. Howard: No, I’m very happy to say. I remember as a child considering the inevitability of growing up and wondering what the worst thing about it would be. It all looked pretty good from that perspective: money, going to bed when you liked, being able to go into any certificate film, and so on. Finally, I spotted a bad point, and that bad point was having to fill in forms. And I was right. There’s just something about completing a form that fills me with dread in its consideration, and depression during its commission. Which reminds me; I have two to fill in this week. Oh, joy. Question: Johannes is a bit of an anti-hero and his motivations are somewhat mysterious. Do you think that he’s misunderstood by those around him? Jonathan L. Howard: He’s definitely misunderstood, although if he were understood, it still wouldn’t make him popular. The fact that he’s labeled a necromancer gives him a public relations problem, as the vast majority of them are power hungry lunatics. Cabal’s ultimate aim is to defeat death, and to have the ability to bring people back just as they were when they were alive, physically, mentally, and spiritually. No lurking demonic possessions, no uncouth brain gobbling. His researches in that direction, however, have not been conducted in the most advantageous light. Question: What’s next for you? Jonathan L. Howard: I handed in the submission draft of the second Cabal novel Johannes Cabal the Detective just the other week, so that will be going through the editorial process shortly. I also have to decide what the next Cabal novel after that will be; I have a couple of ideas so it’s a case of weighing pros and cons before making a decision. I have a couple of non-Cabal novels, one of which is completed but needs a second draft, and the other is about 80% done. I’d like to get them polished, and then see if we can get them into print. A side comment by Richard Kadrey on Twitter led me to this book. I love the Sandman Slim series and figured, hey, Kadrey likes it, why not give it a try.So I've burned through 3 of the books and bought all of the rest and the short stories for my Kindle. Johannes is fussy, loathsome, highly intelligent and ruthless to the point of sociopathy. Holmes without a conscience. (H.H. Holmes & Sherlock combined). So why have I spent my money on this?Because he's delightful in a particularly English way. The dialog is sharp, the asides casually thrown in descriptions are wonderful and witty. You need to pay attention to what is happening so you don't miss anything. I'll not spoil anything but I will say that some of the critical reviews are factually accurate but beside the point. This is 'steampunk horror' in the same way that Sandman Slim is 'urban horror' or the Laundry Files are 'bureaucratic horror'. Horror is the Macguffin, steampunk is the milieu. The joy is in the story and the characters.

Howard’s portrayal of Johannes, and his vampire brother (Horst), makes for a hilariously dark read that takes you from graveyards, from town to town, and directly into the pits of hell itself. Johannes is a scientist who previously made a deal with the devil to learn the art of necromancy. Now, he wants his soul back and makes a second deal with the devil in order to win it back. One that involves a dark carnival (read as inspired by “Something Wicked this Way Comes,” by Ray Bradbury) in which Johannes must get one hundred souls signed over to the devil in order to win his soul back.You will see just how far over the line Johannes is willing to step as far as getting evil/corrupt people to sign over their souls (people who are arguably damned anyway) vs. tricking innocent souls into signing their lives away. It makes for an interesting ponder over what you might be capable of doing to others if it meant saving yourself or someone you loved. Would you damn an innocent in order to save yourself? If you say that you wouldn’t, I bet when push came to shove, you would. The fight for self-preservation in order to live is very strong, and is an ingrained instinct that would be hard to change, even if you wanted to.The writing is full of wit, and the darkness of the subject matter is balanced with the humor of both the situations themselves, and by the dialogue between the characters.I loved it! We learn at the end of this book exactly why necromancy is so important to Johannes. He doesn’t want to create a zombie army to do his evil bidding, nothing like that. The point isn’t that he wants a bunch of animated corpses to provide free labor to work in his lab. He has a reason for wanting what he wants that isn’t based on an evil desire to harm the world, and this reason is what makes him a sympathetic character.This is the first book of a series, and I have already ordered the remaining books, with the exception of the fifth (because it hasn’t been released yet).

I have every kindle tale with Cabal as protagonist. They are engaging stories with few defects: anachronisms and a bit slow pace are the ones that draw more my attention. Nevertheless the tales are short and the punch line makes them worthy to read and funny. This is not the case with this book. The small defects are now more noticeable due the persistence of them along the story. In the tales Cabal has comical or lovable characters that counterweight his dryness... he goes to the adventure not for the sake of it but despite it so the secondary protagonists are the ones giving the enthusiasm to the narrated adventure. The book also has more anachronisms, perhaps the author wants to give the idea of a not definite time but the effect is unsettling, breaks the coherence of the narration.My analysis of the book would be the following:* Satan and the demons are quite infantile, that is not wrong but certainly is weird considering that Cabal it is not. Lack of coherence. I mean, they can be joyful and happier of course but they are like kids in a universe where everybody is it not.*Around the 20% of the book I understood Cabal was bored with the adventure so I don't know why I would invest in its reading.*Around 48% I am in pain, this book is hell and I am begging for the wager to be just to get three souls in one hour instead of one hundred in one year Y_Y* The process to get souls is uninteresting, the carnival is uninteresting.* The author introduces characters (two robbers, a crow, Cabal's brother) but or they don't participate or they don't want to participate in the story.* In the Quixote Spain is an empty place filled by his genius and lovable madness. In this story the places Cabal visit are empty and boring and as Cabal doesn't care about the adventure actually he doesn't interact with them, he is so bored that he would prefer to be at home and to be honest me too.* The resolution is a bit better and it would be a better one if it were the culmination of a short story but, alas, this was so long. I reached 100% for the sheer will to end each book I read.This book would deserve a lower score if it were not for the amazing chapter that paradoxically is a filler chapter that neither adds nor contributes to the story "Chapter 7 - In which Cabal discovers that hell comes in different flavours and that one should always make time" if you consider it as an independent tale it is worth five stars, Cabal actually struggles and applies his will, he is interested in move the plot: I loved it! I enjoyed "Chapter 9 - In which I go to the carnival and see stuff" it is a great story without Cabal so there is not his bored attitude to spoil it. And that is all, I didn't like the book but still there are some few good parts.

According to the two debut authors and various politicians, the American middle class is ailing; while wealth is increasingly concentrated in the hands of a plutocratic elite, inequality skyrockets.Chivukula, New Jersey's former Deputy Speaker and Democrat, and Musum, a prominent Republican businessman, argue that the crux of the problem is that labor has gradually become severed from capital, and so the vast majority of productivity in the economy is supplied by a disenfranchised class hobbled by an appalling lack of appropriate payment for its efforts. The authors contend that the solution to this problem is to make the economy more inclusive by expanding the private ownership of both small businesses and corporations. This would be largely accomplished by a systematic overhaul of the tax system, which would simultaneously decrease taxes and dismantle various tax barriers to the proliferation of Employee Stock Ownership Plans. Those stock plans permit workers to enjoy the advantages of ownership while avoiding the principal disadvantages: they don't have to buy this stock with their own wages or front their own property as collateral. The authors repeatedly make clear that this enlargement of the owner class, or the creation of more capitalists, drives their proposal. "Here's the bottom line: Dramatically accelerate broad based property/capital ownership. Do that by requiring every corporate tax incentive conditioned on having some form of a broad based ownership share plan for their workers. Period." The authors believe that this approach navigates between the alternatives of ferocious capitalism and ideological socialism. They call this the third way, which is an expression of "economic democracy." This is not a facile exercise in political idealism: Chivukula and Musum furnish considerable empirical evidence that their strategy will not only work, but also be politically appealing to a broad spectrum of citizens, irrespective of party allegiances. What has been missing from the inequality debate is a readable book that bridges the political divide and presents both the Democratic and the Republican voice in the same volume, with a set of consensus policy ideas that are clearly written and highly accessible. Chivukula and Musum are not academics so this is a popularly written volume, unrehearsed and blunt. They articulate a serious middle class criticism of economic inequality that is raw and unvarnished. They explore the bipartisan overlap that most observers completely miss. They clearly explain why broader capital ownership represents a fresh statement of an old idea that requires public education and debate and policies to advance the idea. Because this book articulates diverse viewpoints, you may not accept every analysis or every prescription, but you will find a stark and radical and refreshing statement of citizen frustration with some straightforward proposals that require serious discussion. Great book, well written.

Incredible book! Lots of information that is easy to digest and apply. In a world where every economic argument and solution are wrapped in left/right vitriol, Chivukula and Musum squarely address income inequality in a fresh, non-political and throughly workable manner. The two political opposites have hit on the jugular of spreading the wealth, without unfairly penalizing the winners, while creating equal opportunities for workers. As the authors say, the problem with capitalism is not enough capitalists. The two set about to show how every worker can become part of the capitalist success story. They go on to describe in detail how companies can provide Employee Stock Ownership Plans for their workers that give each employee an opportunity to share in the success they work to build. ESOP's are nothing new and over 15 million employees already participate in similar plans. What is new is the ingenious way the authors describe for using tax credits to help fund the programs. With deductions for the company and a painless way to invest for their employees, the 3rd Way deserves attention. With the newest Affordable Care Act requirements upsetting the benefits picture for thousands of companies and their workers, The 3rd Way deserves a look by every buisinessowner or manager wanting to hold onto good people. The book is easy read with plenty of diagrams to make a complex subject accessible. As a business owner, I highly recommend this book.

The book cites increase in inequality with the top 1% getting 45% of the national income under the Clinton administration increasing to 65% under Bush and to 93% under Obama, completing the hollowing of the American middle class. The arithmetic is suspect in light of a 40% government share of GDP. More economically versed writers use the Gini index as an inequality measure. Share of the top 1% is more anecdotal than economic science with the government distributing a large share of the money while diluting the rest.Productivity share is now 90% capital and 10% labor. The book cites statistics on the gap between labor and capital and another gap between labor and technology as our political system has not kept pace with technology advancement. Society has evolved to a Plutocracy under failed government stimulus.It's necessary and logical logical to grant labor an ownership of capital in exchange for reduction of the world's highest corporate tax rate. The authors propose employee ownership (EO), primarily ESOPs, although they describe other forms like KSPS, CSOPS, etc.. Lincoln with his Homestead Act had this in mind. An alternate solution, the discriminatory minimum wage is a mechanism for holding black youth out of the work forceSociology, politics of democracy and economics are all simplified for public consumption. The authors attempt to politicize the the issue into right/ left wing ideology with a florid, populist, style of writing involving science aphorisms like tectonic shifts. They reference ideas of Hegel, Ben Franklin, Louis Brandeis and Louis Kelso the originator of the ESOP idea. They applaud companies like PG that compensate employees with vesting stock options. Silicon Valley is a bastion of corporations engaging is some form of shared equity shared equity.Page 75 exemplifies a simplistic approach to democracy. “In a democracy no one can stop the will of the people once they are informed, united and vocal in their desire.” It sounds like Occupy Wall Street, protest marchers or the French Revolution. On page 17 they have Thomas Jefferson writing the constitution. There is the occasional thoughtless error like proposing taxation as a percentage of revenue. I'm sure that's not what is meant. There is some interesting and sound information here, but the simplification for popular consumption is a bit overdone.There is a good introduction to the economics of optimum government size and expenditure with Armey and Rahn curves, variations of the Laffer curve that illustrates optimum tax revenue. Missing from the study of inequality is the Gini coefficient, the authors preferring to use the simplistic and meaningless share of richest 1% or, when convenient, the richest 0.1%.Capitalism works, but is not fair. Socialism is ethical but doesn't work, with examples of the USSR, Cuba, NK, and the improvement in China after Mao. It's not so clear whether the latter can be attributed to astute manipulation of world capitalism or improved leadership, lacking in the USA. In present day politics populist ethics trumps logic, observation and economics.The book's EO and tax proposals involve impeccable logic on the relationship between labor and capital. However, these authors don't seem to be aware of the extent of the political opposition. Greed of corporations and liberal government will likely scuttle support for these proposals. Another hurdle is that campaigns of Obama, Clinton and Sanders aided by socialist economists like Thomas Picketty, Paul Krugman and Robert Reich have gulled the American public into an anti-capital, ant-corporate stance. With the obvious advantages of privatized SS so roundly deplored, legislated EOs are unlikely to achieve the approval of egalitarian entitlement majority politicians and voters.

This is finally what America needs! This book simply explains the answer to creating wealth. Through employee ownership, the employee can gain financial independence and the corporation will have a committed dedicated employee for long term gain. This is a Win / Win for everyone.! A book whose time has come! What better way to address income inequality than to make everyone a stakeholder in America's prosperity? Everybody knows human nature is you are wiser when spending or using your own money, so giving employees a stake in the companies they work for is just good common sense. I highly recommend this book.

This is a must read...finally what this country needs and more importantly the hard working employees that grow companies. Through employee ownership, the employee can gain financial independence. Moreover, it would create committed employees for long term.

Before purchasing this I went to a local bookstore and looked through all the N.O. travel guides. This book outshone the others - it contains lots of great information on N.O. and its surrounding areas. There is a lot of detail and off-the-beaten-path highlights not found in other travel guides. I live on the Northshore of N.O. and through this guide, have discovered places I hadn't heard about before - and that are well worth visiting. Also important to note is that this travel guide seems to be up-to-date on places that are still closed post-Katrina.

Lots of insights about New Orleans and Cajun Country. Helped us find the most interesting plantations and best places to eat.

I was looking for more info about the old homes on the river road. However there is much info about New Orleans and the Cajun country. The book is a few years old so the prices are out of date. For the price I am happy with the purchase.

The information in this book is old and very out of date. I am amazed that they still sell it. I expect better out of Moon. They should have pulled this edition by now, or better yet updated it. From now on I will check publication dates on Moon guides before buying. Best thing that I can say about it is that it is better than nothing.

Not good

Just came back from a week in New Orleans (second time, last time was two years ago) and purchased this different book to prep for the trip. Tagged many restaurants and locations to visit from the book, only to realize MUCH of the information is old! Lots of restaurants listed have been closed for a while, lots of incorrect phone numbers, incorrect prices, and cuisine reviews that were way off. Good history write-ups, but I was depending more on the other information. When traveling to New Orleans, I'd be conscious to purchase the most up-to-date book as possible.

I chose this New Orleans travel guide for two reasons: it covered Cajun country as well as New Orleans proper, and it had been updated with Post-Katrina information. However, after using it, I can say, it rates highly for many more reasons. The authors seemed to have very good first hand information about all the ins and outs of visiting the New Orleans area today. They never let me down, and their recommendations were right on target. Including the River Road plantations and the Cajun area around Lafayette was extremely helpful, because none of the other guides offered that additional information. Traveling west from New Orleans is great fun, and this guidebook again gave me the inside information I like to have. Both of my B&B hosts generally echoed what I learned from the Moon guidebook. I would definitely choose another guidebook from this publisher if I had the opportunity!

This book provides a general synopsis of the most regularly visted sites of New Orleans. It also provides some information regarding surrounding cities and swamps. It does not provide much historical information or money saving tips.
