I have to agree with "tomtrumpet". I was seriously disturbed when I went through the diagnostic tests with my daughter. The very first problem on one of the very first tests has the words "immediatly" and "enviroment" as being spelled correctly. What?!?!? I thought I was going insane. Maybe I read the answers for the wrong test?? Nope. Those are the words they had marked as being spelled correctly. I have not gotten past the diagnostic tests, and am now, seriously considering whether or not I want to proceed. I expected more from a book that promises "Better Spelling in 30 Minutes a Day." [I do realize book titles should be underlined, but was not able to do that on this review format. :) ]

Good read

As described.

Great young people's book with some good hitorical insight. My 5th grade son read it for school and liked it. I liked that the "protagonist" was female.

Daughter loved the book. She read it because it was on her Summer reading list, but came away deeply moved by the story.

My son enjoyed this book as a summer read. He took it on vacation and could not carried it along everywhere we went until he read it completely. would recommend it.

Looks like a Perma bound old paperback. Nonetheless an enjoyable read.

Riveting

Although it was written in 1970, this story holds up well if you look past the dated cover. Set in Berlin, in 1938, this is the story of Lisa Platt, her older sister Annie and their parents. The Platts are Jewish, and the older Platts sense that things are not going to be easy under Hitler's rule. Their housekeeper quits, the children can no longer attend school, and more openly Jewish relatives and friends are suffering more and more hardships under the new regime.Lisa's father leaves for America, planning to send for the family, but things take longer than expected, and in the meantime, Lisa and Annie and their mother take a "vacation" to Switzerland, where they hope they can safely stay until they can join their father. Money is short, the mother's health is not good, and author Levitin has created a well paced story with tension, that still isn't too frightening for a 11 or 12 year old reader. Roughly sketched black and white illustrations appear every 10 pages or so. There are many more recently written and excellent stories of this time period (YELLOW STAR, WHEN HITLER STOLE PINK RABBIT, THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PAJAMAS, ASHES, IS IT NIGHT OR DAY? Just to name a very few.) If you come across this one at the library, check it out and read it! Black Mecca: The African Muslims of Harlem, is a very interesting and intimate look inside an African Muslims community. Dr. Abdullah's book welcomed me into a world within a world. It took me on a compelling journey through the lives of several individuals. I became personally connected to them while sharing their everyday blessings, shortcomings and some of their cultural traditions. In the second chapter, I found myself in a sixty-foot, single-cabin catamaran on a journey across the Atlantic with fourteen Senegalese men bound for New York. I really enjoyed reading this book and found it hard to put down once I started the journey.

Staring in the 1960’s through September 2011, the palate of the American public has been over-saturated with predominately two types of Islamic ideologies: the Nation of Islam and the Arab cultural Islam. Black Mecca, written by Dr. Zain Abdullah, gives insight into a wider, more robust pictorial of the Islamic religion. Black Mecca gives a firsthand account of present day life for both African immigrants and Afro Americans in the Harlem community. This documented account of the personal lives and behind the scenes views of their daily challenges gives the reader a preview of what will become the new Harlem community. The new Harlem renaissance will be a mixture of this multicultural, linguistic, and bicoastal dynamic outlined in the pages of this great work, Black Mecca. I advise all educators, ethnic historians, and anyone else interested in where American culture is headed to read this book.

Black Mecca gave an interesting perspective on how African Immigrant Muslims perceive America to be. The sacrifices, struggle'sand faith of the African Muslims are well documented by Dr. Abdullah. Here for the first time in over 100 reviews, must separate ratings and advice: a) Book - Not recommended. Try Primal Leadership, as this was the book, as the authors indicate, was what this book was based on. If you wish to gamble on these authors, try their updated version of this book, "Emotional Intelligence 2.0." Please note that I have not read either of these books. b) Survey - Recommended until someone else steps up and quantifies EQ (if someone else has, I would go there first however).

The whole reason I got the book was to be able to take the test and find out my EI score. However, I got the kindle version because it would be immediate and what they dont tell you is that there’s no code for the test in the kindle version. Such a rip off.

Mostly stories and justifying why emotional intelligence is important; certainly not "everything I needed to know to put my EQ to work". In fact, it left me wondering exactly what book I should look at next to find out how to put my EQ to work.

Easy to read, well written and full of good advice. This is good for anyone wanting to improve their people skills.

Great book to help improve yourself. Great tips on how to better communicate with others and what the barriers are for yourself.

Hardly anyone is new to the idea of emotions or controlling one's emotions, however the categorization the authors use of emotional intelligence is useful as a tool for analyzing one's strengths and weaknesses in using one's emotions. The categorization has as four parts: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management. This is the biggest takeaway of the book. The rest of it is clarification or examples of what each category includes and how its important in personal situations.I have benefited from seeing people's behaviors through the lens of EQ. It helps explain not only my emotional strengths/weaknesses but also where other people have developed their emotional skills and where they are lacking.I only give it 3 stars because as useful as the categorization of emotional intelligence is (emotional intelligence really a misnomer, should be called emotional skill), there is no practical method for improving one's EQ provided by the book. The book itself is a quick read and doesn't go into much depth. Take the online assessment -- the questions themselves are useful in understanding what is considered high emotional intelligence. By the end, you'll know what EQ is, you'll know how to identify it, but in terms of improving your own EQ, this book leaves you to your own devices. Then again, knowing is half the battle. YMMV.

As a Career Management Coach, I find this book very helpful in working with clients on improving their emotional intelligence.
