Dr. Sebastiano Foti is an associate professor in geotechnical engineering at the Politecnico di Torino, Italy. He has been a research scholar at the Georgia Institute of Technology and a research associate at the University of Western Australia, Perth. His primary interests are in geophysical methods for geotechnical characterization, geotechnical earthquake engineering, and soil–structure interaction. Dr. Carlo G. Lai is an associate professor in geotechnical engineering at the University of Pavia, Italy. He is also the head of the Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering Section at EUCENTRE and affiliate faculty at the ROSE School both in Pavia. His primary interests are in modeling of seismic wave propagation in geomaterials, earthquake geotechnics, and engineering seismology. Dr. Glenn J. Rix is a principal with Geosyntec Consultants Inc. in Atlanta, Georgia (USA). Prior to joining Geosyntec in 2013, Dr. Rix was a professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. His primary interests are in soil dynamics, geotechnical earthquake engineering, and seismic hazard and risk analysis. Dr. Claudio Strobbia is a land processing specialist and seismic processing supervisor with Total in Pau, France. Before joining Total, he was a senior research geophysicist with Schlumberger, stationed in both Cairo, Egypt, and London. He has worked as a researcher for the EUCENTRE in Pavia, and has taught exploration seismology at the University of Milan Bicocca. His primary interests are in wave physics, inverse problems, near-surface geophysics, and seismic processing. Within exploration seismology his main contributions are in noise attenuationand near-surface characterization.

One of the most profound and original takes on psychotherapy ever written. Watt's is eclectic; does not subscribe to any form of doctrinaire thinking, or world view. He's quite familiar with all the major philosophic and psychological positions; and while he finds value in many of them, he does not embrace any of them. At the same time, he was admittedly influenced by Taoism and Zen. This little book is actually very sophisticated stuff. It's not for everyone. I think it requires some background from the reader in philosophy, world religion, and psychological theory to get the most from this book.

The first half is pretty interesting. The second half slows down a bit.This book is not really about psychotherapy in the typical sense of the word.Alan Watts is a funky philosopher / zen guru. I suggest listening to a lot of his lectures.If, after listening to hours of Watts's lectures, you still want to read one of his books, choose a different Alan Watts book. This one is probably not for beginners.

For me Alan Watts can hardly miss a step, but this is perhaps not the most compelling of his work. Maybe it's the subject matter. Still Watts' witty insights, but not his best. Watts' collectors will want it for the collection, but newcomers might look elsewhere. Give "This Is It" a look.

This has to be one of Watts' most profound works. His ability to weave Eastern Philosophy into the more relatable Western psychology has opened me to a level of understanding and acceptance I never thought possible. This is not an easy read if you're new to his philosophy of unfamiliar with basic psychology,but if you have interest in either area, Watts will blow your mind with his simple, beautiful logic as he weaves liberation and mental sanity together.

A long out of print book recently back in production. It's easy to see why it was out of print for so long: it's comparison of eastern thought vs western psychology is just about entirely irrelevant due to the leaps and bounds western psychology has made since the book was written. Freud and Jung? Really? I've overheard two blue collar men in a Home Depot commiserate on their anxiety and insecurities, and their rewarding efforts to seek help with a therapist; a conversation between two men that just WOULD NOT HAPPEN in the 1950s. It's not the author's fault though - he was just writing from the perspective of the 1950s.The book still has merit though. Alan Watts will always deliver some kind of crucial insight to new readers (unless in some future time everyone has become enlightened and no longer have the need for these kind of books).I did detect a possible gender bias though. It seemed like whenever he gave an example of someone doing wrong it was a woman (and a mother in particular - fathers didn't seem to have relationships with their children in his view - another relic of decades past).I definitely don't think newbies to Alan Watts should start with this book.
