The title of the book "Wild Ways" is apt for the legendary Japanese Zen Monk Ikkyu (1394 - 1481)who wrote poetry, drank frequently, found truth in brothels, and was deadly serious about Zen meditation. He was disgusted with the hypocrisy of fame-and-fortune Zen and frequently ridiculed them. He shunned temple life and mingled with all manner of people. But at age 80 he was asked to become the head abbot of the most important Zen Temple of Japan Daitoku-ji which he succeeded in rebuilding after it had been destroyed in a war. He died at age 87 while sitting in a lotus pose.His Rinzai Zen master Kaso gave him the name "Ikkyu" which roughly means "one pause" after he penetrated and understood a koan at age 24. He achieved enlightenment at age 26. But Ikkyu preferred to call himself "crazy cloud" and his master Kaso concurred when he said " Ikkyu is my true heir, but his ways are wild".A Crazy Cloud, out in the openBlown about madly, as wild as they come!Who knows where this cloud will go, wherethe will will still?The sun rises from the eastern sea, and shinesover the land."Wild Ways" is a selection of more than a thousand poems he wrote. In the end, it contains the famous "Skeleton" poem in its entirety with pencil sketches which adds a beautiful touch. I am a huge fan of Ikkyu. I totally enjoyed reading these poems, however it is merely not my favorite collection, having a lot fewer of those poems which instantly strike you to yr core. However, I have come to enjoy the creative, different formatting of the book--and to be accurate--there are several gems of thought to be found here.

My favorite Zen master

This little book of poems and drawings by Ikkyu is a total delight. A wild free sensuous crazy Zen monk left us these terrific drawings and poems of his unemcumbered life, yet he was , in my view, a very deep Zen Buddhist living every moment, savoring it, suffering through it, and moving on. The last part is a long famous poem Skeletons worth reading and rereading.

If Ikkyu is of interest to you, this book is a must.It contains multiple, short poems by the master. Also, it contains some of his very best work -- inspiring, beautifully written and well translated.Artists of any kind will like this book a great deal.

I have very much been enjoying the book. It is a great representation of Ikku Zen Poetry. Well translated, and adapted for the west. If you like Ikkus zen poetry I recommend the book.

I was excited to get this, as there are only two versions of Ikkyu's poetry in English currently in print, the other being Crow With No Mouth, translated by Stephen Berg. The Berg translation definitely set me up for a letdown with this. These translations are written in a form that is alien to Japanese poetry, and have so much superfluous language that the spirit of Ikkyu, resilient as it is, ends up buried beneath it all. Take, for example, this translation by Stevens:Ten days in this temple and my mind is reeling!Between my legs the red thread stretches and stretches.If you come some other day and ask for me,Better look in a fish stall, a sake shop, or a brothel.Compared with Berg's version:Ten fussy days running this temple all red tapeLook me up if you want to in the bar whorehouse fish marketNot only is Berg's infinitely more beautiful and sensitive, but you can see that Stevens actually totally mistranslates the line about red tape. The "red thread" he is referring to is the red thread school of Zen, which viewed sexual intimacy as a religious rite (Ikkyu was known to wear his monk's robe in brothels). But clearly Ikkyu is not referring to the red thread here, and it completely alters the meaning of the poem.These translations completely miss the mark. Luckily enough of Ikkyu's extralingual sensibility shines through to make it not a total waste of money, but only for the few poems in here that are not available in the Berg translation.Long story short: this is not the poetry of Ikkyu. Get Berg's translation, or better yet, learn Japanese!

(And maybe urge the amazon reviews-reviewer to somehow link or transfer them to this listing.) This is a wonderful small book, one of the White Pines Companions. There's a small introduction. About 75 poems. Also, the complete Skeletons, a zen prose and poem treatise. Also, there are several poor quality black and white woodblock prints from older Japanese editions. Currently, this is one of two books of translations reasonably available for purchase. There is also a popular book of transliterations. There are a few older books available if you're willing to pay close to a hundred dollars or if you can find them in a library (good luck). I'd suggest this is the one to buy first though. And enjoy. For Ikkyu is a singularity.

This is a superb book, but one that sets limits for itself. Its purpose is to delineate the visions which undergird the political impulses of the major political parties. It argues that the disparate visions are traceable to disparate beliefs regarding human nature. The 'constrained' vision can be traced to thinkers such as Hobbes, Burke and Adam Smith, the 'unconstrained' vision to thinkers such as Godwin, Condorcet and Rousseau. The consistency of the respective visions and the degree to which they cover a multiplicity of current issues is striking. It is almost as if some are born with one vision, others with another. Sowell acknowledges that some individuals have changed their visions, but often under 'road to Damascus' circumstances. Some have been persuaded by empirical evidence, though it is a truism (one reinforced here) that the respective visions are often resistant to evidence.The book is scrupulously objective in its goals. The book is analytic and descriptive, not polemical. Sowell goes out of his way to avoid choosing sides or offering compelling evidence for the inconsistency or absurdity of either of the visions. He is not recruiting readers to one side or the other. He is constructing two complex mirrors in which his readers can attempt to see themselves and the degree to which their individual views are part of a large, centuries-old pattern.My own sense is that he's got this right and he's used the best examples, though I might have added a touch more Rousseau to the mix. The objective analysis, however, comes with a price. In resisting the impulse to take sides and adduce evidence justifying the taking of sides he has written a book which is more theoretical/historical than historical/theoretical. In short, the want of copious examples is often felt. Also, the fact that Sowell is such an effective polemicist (when he is writing in that mode) makes one regret that he is here purposely confining and restraining himself. Nevertheless, the book is excellent and does exactly what it sets out to do--fairly, clearly and persuasively.For those with an interest in human nature (or its alleged nonexistence), one can also highly recommend Pinker's The Blank Slate, a nice companion volume to Sowell's and one that is less constrained in its arguments.

I would highly recommend Sowell's book to anyone who's interested in gaining a better understanding of the intellectual conservative argument. As a liberal-leaning individual, I rarely get a real take on conservative ideology. I wouldn't say Sowell flipped my perspective, but he certainly allowed me to understand and appreciate the value and sincerity of conservatism beyond the hackneyed hot-takes that flood cable news on both sides of the aisle.

Thomas Sowell is in my opinion one of the most important intellectuals of the XXth century.He would probably cringe at my assertion, as in this and other books he places severe limits on the "value" of most "intelectual" output. Or more accuratelly, on the value that intellectuals have had on society.Sowell builds his argument from a simple premise: most political and economic discussions arise from inherently contrasting views on "the nature of man". One the one hand, the "unconstrained" view assigns great weight to reason, and assumes that concern for others can be an important factor fort the funcioning of society.In contrast with the above, the "constrained" view places emphasis on evolutive learning (individual and social), and is sceptical as regards to altruism and related behavior.Sowell discussed at lenght the history of these views in economic and political thought, and their impact for understanding the functioning of socienty. His approach is (in my opinion) quite objective, frequently quoting paragraphs from authors of both camps.Interesting to me is the discussion of marxism, that in constrast to socialism or "social democracy" follows a constrained version of human history, only to be repaced by the "unconstrained" when the ideal comunist state is achieved. In this sense, it is sometimes easier to debate with a died-in the-wool marxist, than with a more ambiguous and " wooly" social democrat.Sowell builds upon and effectivelly uses the insights derived from Adam Smith's book, as well as Hayek's article on the use of knowledge in society. New and fresh insights are derived.Sowell also draws on Burke's work on political processes. Indeed, an important strength of his book is his deep undertanding not only of economics, but of political science and law. The term "political economist" is a natural one to label Thomas Sowell.This is a highly important book. I would say "indispensable", although the author would surely object to this probably dogmatic assertion.

I've read most of Sowell's work, but this is a favorite. The author presents his views in an unbiased way; straight forward. As we consider the debates between conservative and progressive policies today, this work always seems to ring true. The views as they are presented will tend to cause your mind to go off on a tangent searching for an application in your own past experience, which can make for some distracted and slow reading, but the language is not difficult, even for the less than scholarly reader. If a person would like to better understand and codify their own views on policy and societal matters, this a great place to start.

I am a college professor. For anyone, either liberal or conservative, this is the classic work that explains the basis of our thinking. It is a far cry from the insults and name calling of today, rather a look at the "great debate" of man's nature and the consequences of each view. I felt like I was sitting as a student at the feet of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle. It is one of the best and most readable works on this subject that has appeared in decades.
