Trying to memorize the Shorter Catechism is never going to be easy because the answers are long in order to be complete. Unfortunately, the original version is also filled with "haths" and "continueths" and "executeths," etc which do not make it any easier to remember.The Shorter Catechism in Modern English is, in my opinion, a great update. They've been able to make it more manageable while not losing the completeness and truth of the original wording.Highly recommend it. I did all my memorization from this one, and I actually bought a copy for a poor kid I know who is struggling to learn the old version.
While I enjoy the original language of the Westminster Shorter Catechism, I find this update into modern English refreshing and often helpful in understanding some of the wording of the original. If you're going to explain concepts to people in English, there's no sense in explaining with a "King James lisp". This modern English catechism does just that. In a catechism class that I teach to middle schools students, they overwhelmingly prefer this version of the WSC to the original.
NIV is the Bible of choice for the authors & editors of this translation of this version of the WSC (Westminster Shorter Catechism). I will be going back to the original WSC that I own for the following reasons.This is the most disappointing book purchase to date. It is affordable and after purchasing it I have a better understanding of reason. It is short, the size of a pamphlet and without scripture backup. That alone has changed what has made the WSC beloved and treasured for centuries. WSC has endured the test of time and I believe that it is because of the scriptural backup. I can see authorial intent and the wisdom as I follow along with the bible verses. The 1,2,3 punch is the scripture backup.I find it would be more honest to state that this is based on the NIV version rather than Modern English. If I had seen that I would not have purchased it. Stating Modern English suggests that it is in a formal translation such as ESV, NASB or NKJV that is respected, concise and scholarly.I was hoping for a concise version but was drawn by the Modern English as I had assumed it would use a formal translation/equivalent Bible. There are better versions that speak in plain English upon which to draw your "Modern English".NIV aside, this just doesn't read or provoke you to go to your Bible. You read it and that's that. You don't study these truths that men of history have penned, loved and deemed as the 2nd most important piece of writing after the Bible. I was changed after reading the original WSC with scripture proofs and it deepened my understanding of man, God and why I am here. More importantly I have a deeper love for God, an understanding of the need to evangelize and a richer understanding of why I believe what I believe. And I have scripture to back it up.
Classic Catechism in modern language. Great for modern day teaching through the catechism without losing any of the value of the original.
I love these. I think I've bought 5 already; one for myself, one for my nephew, and one for each one of my sons. These are an excellent resource for learning the basics of what we as Christians need to know.
