I have been a fan of Jonni Good for a long time,. I love her creativity and her books make paper mache sculpting look easy. But this book is so different as she makes us look at the clay and asks us to use our imagination and to be free of any preconceived notions of what it is we want to make. The clay tells us what it is and we go for it. It is not a big book but it is big on ideas and a great way to let us loose and use creativity in a new and wonderful way. Talent becomes a word as you do not need talent just a lot of imagination and the willingness to have fun in the process. I bought the book and I love the premise of creativity being universal and anybody can do it.

Well, this little book is quite an inspiring tale of creativity by an extremely generous author! You may think it is just about a blob of clay, but think again! this book has me creating with a smile, no frustration and looking forward to sharing with my grandkids, mother, and anybody else who comes by! In addition I have realized I have skills in woodworking as I built the sculpting easel, not just one but 3! All different sizes to fit the kids and myself and they turned out rather nice. My first fast face was soooo much fun and has helped me put expressions on other projects! Love

I have hundreds of them, but this one approaches art with great entertainment, fun sculptures, education, and displays psychological insights about art throughout. Even though the book is about unleashing your own creativity -- and Jonni Good teaches you how to do that -- it also addresses the psychological part of you to let you see differently, experiment differently, and learn differently. I look at all my art projects differently. I have more fun, I listen to what I see, and I see differently.I showed the book to a friend who is a special education teacher, and what she immediately saw was the application in teaching children. At that I sent off the book to two of my sisters who have used it to have fun with their grandchildren, teaching and inspiring them.There are many applications for this book, but mostly it is about how to see and not be afraid of creativity.

I teach a beginning sculpture class. This book is special in the way it gets new students to get their hands dirty as they begin to see the possibilities of creating some figurative work. Thanks, Jonni . . . you save the day for me while I am working with newbies.

Of a trip through these latitudes, sailors warned, "Below 40 South there is no law, below 50 South there is no God." Murphy, a mystery writer and nautical journalist, sailed there from Ushuaia, Argentina, in a 53-foot sloop and carefully points out that he only visited the island rather than sailing around it. He revels in the tales of those who made the entire trip, however, and spends much time vividly recounting their adventures, found in old books with thrilling titles like The World Encompassed and A Two Years' Cruise off Tierra Del Fuego. Nautical buffs will find some of these yarns familiar: Darwin's South American voyages aboard HMS Beagle were the subject of last fall's Evolution's Captain, by Peter Nichols, and Murphy's version adds little to the story beyond subtle interpretive differences. Another chapter touches upon the U.S. Navy's South Seas Exploring Expedition, chronicled at length by Nathaniel Philbrick in Sea of Glory (also published last fall). Cape Horn is the southernmost point of South America, in the Tierra del Fuego archipelago. Murphy, a novelist and journalist, sailed to Cape Horn in 2000. He chronicles the history of the cape and describes in detail the many ships that have made the voyage, battered by the unique weather with its treacherous winds. Francis Drake and Robert FitzRoy are two of the many explorers whose voyages Murphy recounts here. (FitzRoy was the captain of the Beagle and Charles Darwin was its most famous passenger.) Much of the book deals with Murphy's own trip to Cape Horn. In vivid prose, he describes the ship and observes and wonders about birds and other animals; he makes readers experience the island wilderness as if firsthand, and feel for themselves the driving rain and wind that he encountered. If you are into "sailing around the Horn" this book is for you. It is very well written, with humor. The author intersperses his experiences sailing around Cape Horn with historical incidents, geography, and descriptions of weather phenomena and how it affects sailing in those waters. He describes some gruesome historical events of ships in unimaginable storms, and their survival. The courage of the seamen, the captains and their ships cannot be overstated. And outstanding book about seamanship and a mean hunk of rock.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book, but was pleasantly surprised to find it quite a good read. I am very glad that the author didn't dwell too much on his personal voyage as it was somewhat uneventful. While interesting and informative, I did not buy the book with the expectation it would be a travelogue; and it's not.Instead, the book is rich with insightful and entertaining descriptions of the early explorer's encounters with the climate, topography and indigenous people of that time. Covering everything from the earliest Spanish explorers to the present day territorial conflicts, he also includes wrongheaded missionaries and intriguing eyewitness accounts from clipper ship and windjammer voyages.The history of the Yaghan natives such as the "adopted" Jemmy Button and "Fuegia Basket" was wonderfully detailed for the small amount of time spent on them. The author is a keen observer of things many of us would overlook or fail to appreciate properly. This book is definitely a page turner, as the author expertly seques from his present situations to wonderfully told sea stories.Anyone who enjoys arcane history and anything to do with sailing or ocean adventures should enjoy this tremendously. Highly recommended.

I think this book is brilliant ! It affords the ordinary reader reader an insight into The history and geography of the Cape Horn area . This is a first-hand account of modern-day sailing , interwoven with the journey of the the 'Beagle' ,which took a similar route , many years before with Darwin aboard . One does not have to be a sailor to appreciate the excitement of sea-bound adventures , and this account is one if the best . The book is illustrated only with clearly-drawn maps , but perhaps a detailed sketch of the ships would have increased understanding for readers [like me] who have no knowledge of seaman's language , or a glossary of terms used to describe parts of a sailing ship and her rigging. I gave this book to someone after having read it months ago , but then wanted to read it again , so I oredered it 'used' from Amazon . Considering all the effort which the author must have put into research , it is a bargain at 1 cent plus $3.99 postage ['Lysol' sprayed on arrival] .

I ended up being surprised how enjoyable of a read this has been. I am planning a trip around the horn on a cruise ship and this has definitely added to the enjoyment of the planning. Enjoy his take on history combined with bits of his own journey around the horn. He has me looking forward to my next read of the Uttermost part of the earth to learn even more about this fascinating region of our earth.

I read this while on a cruise around the horn. After reading about the ferocious winds and weather conditions, I realized just how lucky we were! The winds died down the day before we got there. The forecast called for rain, but it ended up being sunny with a great view.Other than the weather, the book was a great read. It added in a lot of history of the region and of the natives including the aboriginals - now mostly extinct, unfortunately - who lived there, completely naked in frigid, windy conditions.

Within the first few pages, two things were clear. (1) The book was going to be a very interesting read. (2) The book is full of mistakes, the sort of mistakes that fact-checkers and editors are hired to deal with, so that book reviewers don't have to injure themselves with interminable face-palming. And that doesn't begin to address the inability of the author to spell place-names correctly or consistently. But this is minor, even when aggravating. And it's fun to read, with the first-person sailing experiences lending an intriguing touch. The errors of fact (and a bit of occasional sleepiness in the editor's work) don't really detract from the interest and readability, unless there is a need to cite factual accuracy, so don't cite Murphy in your thesis. Some of the author's errors are actually the result of reliance on, well, unreliable sources, and the errors of others. Take for example the author's insistence that when Sir Francis Drake was raiding the Spanish colonies, that he was referred to in Spanish as "El Draco." Actually that seems to only appear in erroneous writings in English on the topic, a suggestion that some English-language writer goofed. (The"draco" reference was the "Latinised" and not Spanish version spoken by those most concerned and affected). The Spanish-language and 19th-century English-language texts reveal that Drake was certainly feared, but his name was written as "El Draque." ("... So great an object of terror at Madrid was El Draque that he was looked on as an incarnation of the old serpent...." --The English in the West Indies: Or, The Bow of Ulysses, by J A Froude, noted 19th-century British historian). And then the confusion between "the end of the continent" when the author really meant "the end of the archipelago" - distinctions one would expect to be accurately made by a self-described sailor. There is trouble in other areas of research as well, such as describing the northern ranging of the Alacalufe Indians (he is off by more than 200 km on this one). But again, these are details which won't interfere with the average reader's enjoyment.

Meilaender does a superb job of boiling down the modern ethical questions in the field of medicine for laymen and clergymen alike. While some of his opinions are a bit odd for a conservative (see his chapter on abortion, for example), he generally provides excellent rationales for and, more importantly, ways of thinking about ethical thinking in medicine. He could benefit from looking at how the doctrine of the resurrection influences Christian ethical thought though.Overall though, a very good book.

Reading this book was a nostalgic sojourn spent with them again.I received an advance copy of this book from the author. It is a long book and it took me too long to read it, but it was an enjoyable and enchanting spell. Now I feel somewhat disoriented having to leave those now distant legendary decades of artistic innovation in NYC's Village and the Hamptons with the remarkable artists that peopled it. Highly recommended!

And they were recognized as artists in their own time.Today, they seem to have been lost along the way. This book shows them as holding their own and even influencing their male contemporaries.This book explains how,where and why they created the art that so many people would dismiss as "something my kid could do". And gives the reader a much better understanding of the reasons and thought processes behind their art.For anyone who wants to "understand Modern Art", this could be a primer. And although it is long, it reads like a juicy novel. There are photos of all the women, some of the men and the paintings mentioned in this book.As a former Art Museum docent , the hardest question for my guests to answer was "Name 5 women artists". After reading this book, YOU'll be able to name these 5 incredible artists and then some!

Caveat. I am not an artist or an art historian. I'm simply an art enthusiast. Even though I have already read several biographies on the artists covered in this book, this work offered fresh insight, new angles, and superb context. Like other reviewers have said - at first I could not put the book down - but later I did. I found that often I would read a few pages, but the boo aside and just think and reflect. I realized at some point I didn't want the book to end. Like good novels, the characters in the book became as if they were people I knew, and in each case, I knew, it would end. I felt a longing for a time when Art, literature and drama mattered so much that it was featured on the covers of major magazines. Now we live in a time when major magazines are gone, so many young people barely read, and art is assailed as a frivolous activity that should be removed from education in place of more practical matters. I know of the poets, the literary magazines, and the art of the time covered in this book but really have no idea if anything like that exists in this time. There well may be a similar movement now. So in the end when the last page was turned I felt sad,I wanted to story to continue and this great book to keep going. I am a voracious reader - I count this book as one of the truly great books I have read in my lifetime.

I’ve always had a difficult time understanding abstract expressionism. This is the first book I’ve found that provided insight into the makers, their driving ambition, their art practice, and their lifestyle. I may still not appreciate all the artworks but I do have an appreciation for the struggles and the sacrifices and struggles of the artists. While the focus is on the women, the story is much more comprehensive of the time, the places, and the personalities around the whole movement.

Very long but worth the wait. Interesting & easy to set down & pick up later. Real women artists are documented in the changing word of American art.

I don't read books about art -- I look at art. Ninth Street Women is the exception. I couldn't put it down. Three friends said the same thing: It is the best book about art ever written.

Barbara Barrick is reading this book. It is very readable, informative, thorough, and holds my interest completely. This is exactly the kind of information I wanted to read about these artists. It places them within the historical setting as well. I am enjoying the reading, although the book is very heavy to hold.

Insightful, full of PROBLEMATIC -- NOT PROBLEM -- AS IT APPEARS IN AMAZON'S "CORRECTION" IN PREVIOUS SUBMISSION -- people whom I keep thinking about, in a nexus of personality, gifts, class, character, conditions -- all the things that make us who we are, and certainly made these women who they were: those who prevailed. Brava!
