I chose 3 stars for this book, because, while some of the stories were deliciously strange and creepy, a handful of the stories seemed to be, in my opinion, unsolved due to ineptitude, and, or due to mental illness of the "victim". I have been intensely interested in these types of stories almost all my life. I liked the way it's written. However, as is well known, these stories raise more questions than answers, and I feel that maybe some of the questions in some of these stories weren't necessary for the creepiness factor.

All I can say is wow! I totally love those creepy tv shows, where a paranormal ghost hunter is trying to prove whether a home or building is haunted. They get creepy but this book is creepier! Unexplained vanishings had me hooked and I couldn't put it down. Found has an amazing way with words, describing things perfectly. The stories are truly shocking and creepy and I definitely recommend,

These books are short and some of the stories do not have enough information. The big lesson to take from these stories is to enjoy the woods and the outdoors but always carry a pistol and never, ever separate from each other. Never travel alone. This household never goes to the NE of the US or California. And that is not because of any disappearances.

I liked reading about the strange missing persons cases and unsolved cases. My favorite show as a kid was unsolved mysteries and this book was right up my alley.

It was fascinating to read although i felt that the author repeated a lot of facts which tend to make it boring. Otherwise interesting cases and we as family discussed some of them afterwards due to the fact that it was on the internet and featured in PC games

This is a very informative read, especially if you enjoy mysteries of the unexplained. Steph Young seems to have a passion for writing and tickling the senses of the reader. Therefore I give this a big thumbs up

I have been waiting for this book to come out and it exceeds my expectations! "The Food Lab" by Lopez-Alt is a dense collection of science based tips, explanations, techniques, and recipes for the home cook. This is a must have reference and cookbook for home cooking enthusiasts.I really like the way this book has been laid out:- The introduction is a modest overview of the author and his background followed by some really helpful information on equipment (such as an explanation on techniques for holding knives, how heat transfers through metal for consideration in what type of pan to use, essential equipment to have in your kitchen, and how to store and organize your fridge and pantry).- Recipes in subsequent chapters are divided by meal type. Technique tips and explanations are dispersed through the recipes in every chapter. * The breakfast chapter is lengthy and starts with explaining eggs - their composition and properties related to how they change when they cook, whether brown eggs are healthier than white eggs, how to hard or soft boil an egg,... and much more.There is a great range of recipes including numerous egg dishes, bacon, pancakes, biscuits, and hot chocolate. * Soups and Stews has an in depth explanation of stock followed by recipes including black bean soup, tomato soup with grilled cheese, chicken, and dumplings, chili, and French onion soup. * Meat recipes characterized by how to "Fast Cook" in 30 minutes or less for a variety of steak, pork chops, chicken, and fish recipes. * Cooked Vegetables has a great range of side dishes such as Brussels sprouts, Mexican street corn salad, roasted cauliflower, mashed potatoes, glazed carrots, and quite a few more recipes. * The Ground Meat chapter explains not only how to grind your own meat, but how to season it as well as recipes for making and cooking sausage, meat loaf, and burgers. * There is a Roasts chapter for poultry, lamb, and pork. This is a cook book that everyone must buy. It is absolutely amazing, and also a fantastic gift!! I am a scientist myself, and so the descriptions and the science behind the cooking is SO cool! The meals I have prepared have turned out absolutely delicious, AND they look very much like his professional photos too!!! This is the first time where I've followed the recipe, and what I make looks like what the authors made! This book is absolutely amazing. It will educate you, it will make you a smarter and more confident chef, and it will absolutely entertain you! Kenji has some subtle jokes throughout and some extremely cute pictures of dogs. Awesome book and will be purchasing for family and friends as gifts!

If you can overlook the preening sanctimony of the virtue-signaling author (and good luck with that), you will find this book quite useful. However, there is literally zero reason to purchase it though, as every single one of the recipes is available on his website.

I've been reading Kenji's column since it started, and have learned so much and made so many of his recipes. So, I know they work. I know his recipes are excellent and that he's someone you can trust implicitly to have a great version of a dish.And this book is great, and beautiful, full of photos, his great sense of humor, and excellent instructions.The thing is, I was slightly disappointed that it is very much more of an all-American, sort of new, scientific, Joy of Cooking. Some of my favorite articles from Serious Eats involve Kenji's Asian, Mexican, and vegetarian/vegan recipes. Now he did include some of his vegan work, and his wonderful chile verde is in here, but there are no stir-fries, no tacos, and his absolutely stellar kale salad with crispy chickpeas was passed in favor of two others which are excellent, but really, that salad is AMAZING. Or his black bean burger, which is the absolute best black bean burger on the planet. But whatever, that's not the point. I was just hoping to see more of that type of food, whereas this book is targeted towards beginners (not to say that experienced cooks can't get value out of this book, because it's full of great info) or more specifically, towards people who haven't been reading his column all this time.Having said all that, I have to review the book on its own merits and how could I possibly give such a stellar tome anything but 5 stars?! There is no fault to be found with the information provided or how engaging it is to read. Even the quality of the book, with lovely binding meant to last and meant to make the book truly a workhorse that doesn't just look pretty sitting on a coffee table is worth commending!I'll just have to wait for future books to cover the things I miss from this book. Though in the meanwhile, there are already recipes I've got bookmarked to try out, like his puttanesca, pot roast, oven fries, THAT MEATLOAF, not to mention his excellent egg salad, which I've previously made from the site…I'm so glad to be able to pay Kenji back in some form for the years of free content on Serious Eats and I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in cooking and improving their skills, in particular beginner cooks.But really, go check out his column on Serious Eats, too. ;) His pie dough, chocolate chip cookies, fish tacos, crispy chicken with white beans and chile verde, chop suey, fried avocado tacos, and his vegan experience (CRISPY TOFU) recipes (AND MORE) are all remarkable!

This book is fantastic. It makes learning history fun and entertaining while taking the time to point out where the authors are just blatantly being comical so that those reading are sure to know what is factual and what is not. (Something I understand was added in the 2nd edition because of criticism of the 1st).

Jon Stewart and The Daily Show Team score big in this satrical text-book. "Democracy Inaction" teaches as well as misleads; gives hope and also takes it away. It is The Matrix in book form. Some of the facts are true, some are half-truths, some are outright lies, and the fact that the average reader cannot always tell the difference makes the book's point very clear. The government is run by a people who don't know what the government is or how it works. It's sad, but it's presented with such sharp wit that you take the medicine willingly.For example, we learn that the president, no matter how much he wants to, cannot 'make' laws, unless of course he calls it a police action. We also learn that "Did you know" is copyrighted by a competing publishing company, so our little sidenotes always begin with "Were You Aware?". There is a also a lovely map that shows (in the familiar boardgame fashion) how to become President, and how to stay President once you are there. Samatha Bee pops in now and again with some information on Canadian government always apologizing for cutting in. The other correspondants have strong opinions as well, and I'm sure they are going to run themselves, just as soon as they can figure out how to take that practice podium home.This is a very funny book, and a light read that could be made deeper if you want to take its more serious issues to heart. And even though Walmart won't sell it, I still recommend that you buy it. Freedom of speech and all that jazz;)

Very hilarious and sadly funny but true. Sarcasm with an honest twist of American history. John Stewart always serves political comedy up like a five star restaurant serves its' entrees.

America the Book, Democracy Inaction (excellent pun) takes an irreverent, thought-provoking, but generally quite funny look at America's political history. It offers up a wonderfully entertaining perspective from the writers of The Daily Show with occasional "contributions" from major staff members as well. Of course all jokes don't hit the mark, but the overall tone invites satire of the highest order. It is an easy read seeing as how there is no plot so you can actually pick it up at any point and still be able to "get it." If you are faithful fans of Jon Stewart/The Daly Show, this is indeed a promise fulfilled. The book is a satsifying blend of parody and satire in the spirit of Mad Magazine or the National Lampoon with a political slant.I HIGHLY recommed though you may want to steer clear of reading it on public transportation. People tend to stare when you are reading and laughing out loud.The forward by Thomas Jefferson (who apparently found out Halle Berry was single again!!!) is quite simply a stitch!!!

This book was hilarious. I read it cover to cover. This is iconic and has had a happy home on my coffee table for years. 10/10

This book satirizes a high school government textbook to the T, including silly but profoundly critical discussion questions, diagrams explaining the least functioning parts of the government, and wonderfully wry reinterpretations of historical events. Be prepared for media and government critiques similar to those featured on Stewart's show, which, if we're honest, might be a better education about how things work than other interpretations.

Loved the books so much I sent another copy to a friend who was bemoaning the lack of civics courses available.

This book was enjoyable and lighthearted. I LUUUUVVV naked pix of Supreme Court Justices, and the fact that WalMart banned the book for that reason. Way to go, DS!If you like Michael Moore or Al Franken, this book is for you. It would be hard to believe that anyone in America is not familiar with The Daily Show, but this is exactly the type of humor that has won the show Emmy's and plaudits from people and pundits nationwide.And the book is a steal here at Amazon for just over ten bucks! Buy it if you're a liberal elitist like me with a sense of humor!

Up until about 5 years ago, I read everything that Stephen King wrote. I was a fanatic about his early work. However, it seems that about ten years ago, King went beyond horror and beyond supernatural and into the realm of just plain silly. This work is almost a microcosm of this transformation.In works like The Shining, Misery, Dolores Claiborne, Gerald's Game and Cujo, King demonstrated an ability to be absolutely horrifying without resort to actual corporeal monsters, aliens or supernatural beings. Some of his short stories, such as The Long Walk (written as Richard Bachman) were magnificent looks into human psyche. Even books such as Carrie, Salem's Lot and his masterpiece The Stand included supernatural features without "jumping the shark".It is my observation, however, that virtually all of his most recent work has devolved into the realm of just plain silly. The Gunslinger serial is a perfect example.The first half of this novel is vintage, old school King. Entering the mind and life of a successful building contractor whose life has been turned upside down by a tragic workplace injury. The writing is outstanding. The story moves along well and the suspense builds. About two-thirds of the way through the book, we go from minor instances of supernatural occurence to the now standard, present day King formula of absurd, corporeal beings that can only be termed as laughable. "Big boy, frog beings with TEEFES". Please.If you like the Gunslinger series, or some of King's most recent work, this will be right up your alley. If you prefer the earlier King, you will be pleasantly surprised by the first two-thirds of the book, only to be dumped into "Gunslinger" mode for the last 150 pages. King is one of the few writers that doesn't need monsters to be absolutely horrifying. Someone needs to tell him that.

Of all of Stephen King's books this one was the least frightening to me at first- I thought hey this isn't so bad. It begins with a man suffering a brain injury on construction site that leaves him unable to continue, he's also seeing a therapist due to black out spells and supreme rage. His therapist suggests a change of venue might be good for him. So the man decides to move to Duma Key in Florida. When he gets there, he discovers he has an artistic talent he never had before. Okay so none of this is scary, right. Yes that is what I thought too, this book's not scary at all. But I was wrong. It just takes awhile to get there maybe about a third of the way into the book, but then oh my lord is it scary! I loved it. i don't want to give away too much of it, but let's just say when things begin to happen like herons flying upside down over one part of the island, this is a good sign of what is actually going on here. It was so suspenseful and a great story. It was really hard to put down. And now i just discovered there is a part two to Duma Key. Wow, I've got to read it. Check it out for a good read.

It’s been quite a while since the last time I read a novel on the scale of Duma Key. At well over seven hundred pages in length, it’s not a read for the feint of heart. To tell the truth, that is about the only aspect of it that seems daunting, or perhaps even a touch terrifying. Don’t get me wrong, the story is well written with a depth to it the hints at the way a painter layers on glaze after glaze of color to bring a painting to life.There’s a hint of Lovecraft in Duma Key, in the telling and the story’s soul. It follows three distinct time frames: the story of a little girl as she’s recovering from a head injury, the story Edgar Freemantle rebuilds his life after a debilitating accident, and the time of the narrator, who also happens to be Edgar. The first two tie together in an intertwining thread that follows Edgar and the little girl’s journey to rediscover themselves, sometimes literally, through art. But both paths move past the mundane application of shape and form into something… else. The time of the narrator foreshadows, sometimes almost too much, what is to come. Of course, this is a Stephen King novel, so any mention of something happening to a character is likely an ill portent to say the least.Overall, I would say this is a good read and would definitely recommend it. There are definitely scarier stories out there, and more horrifying, but sometimes that’s the point.

I liked this story quite a bit, and rank it among my favorites of his novels that I've read. This was written after King's own serious accident and you can tell that infuses his main character. There is less gore in this story than in many of his earlier works, and the story has a slowly building sense of supernatural mystery that I really enjoyed. The ending is typical of King's style, but I felt a bit dissapointed in that. He built such an intriguing mystery around an evil force but the evil itself was not explained in a way that fully satisfied my curiosity. Still, it was a decent ending and I think endings can be the hardest part of any story to write. I did really like all the characters and the final scene involving the hero's daughter was very effective. Overall, this is a very intriguing story with a strong mood of supernatural mystery.

This is one of the better Stephen King books I've read lately (I was not particularly fond of the Mr. Mercedes trilogy). One of the things I liked best was there was not a lot of filler like there is in some of his novels. Even though the book was almost 800 pages long, very little if anything needed to be cut. There was one loose end that still bothers me, though. Edgar made a drawing of Perse early on, which he put in his closet along with the drawing of Candy Brown. Why didn't he try to destroy Perse by burning that drawing? It might not have worked, but especially once the deaths started happening, that would have been the first thing I tried. I read all the way to the end expecting King to bring it up but he never did.Other than that, and the fact that King drags us through his misery once again from his horrendous accident that occurred some years ago - something he has a habit of doing in the books he has written since then - I very much enjoyed this book. I don't often give four stars. This one deserves it.
