Trying to memorize the Shorter Catechism is never going to be easy because the answers are long in order to be complete. Unfortunately, the original version is also filled with "haths" and "continueths" and "executeths," etc which do not make it any easier to remember.The Shorter Catechism in Modern English is, in my opinion, a great update. They've been able to make it more manageable while not losing the completeness and truth of the original wording.Highly recommend it. I did all my memorization from this one, and I actually bought a copy for a poor kid I know who is struggling to learn the old version.

While I enjoy the original language of the Westminster Shorter Catechism, I find this update into modern English refreshing and often helpful in understanding some of the wording of the original. If you're going to explain concepts to people in English, there's no sense in explaining with a "King James lisp". This modern English catechism does just that. In a catechism class that I teach to middle schools students, they overwhelmingly prefer this version of the WSC to the original.

NIV is the Bible of choice for the authors & editors of this translation of this version of the WSC (Westminster Shorter Catechism). I will be going back to the original WSC that I own for the following reasons.This is the most disappointing book purchase to date. It is affordable and after purchasing it I have a better understanding of reason. It is short, the size of a pamphlet and without scripture backup. That alone has changed what has made the WSC beloved and treasured for centuries. WSC has endured the test of time and I believe that it is because of the scriptural backup. I can see authorial intent and the wisdom as I follow along with the bible verses. The 1,2,3 punch is the scripture backup.I find it would be more honest to state that this is based on the NIV version rather than Modern English. If I had seen that I would not have purchased it. Stating Modern English suggests that it is in a formal translation such as ESV, NASB or NKJV that is respected, concise and scholarly.I was hoping for a concise version but was drawn by the Modern English as I had assumed it would use a formal translation/equivalent Bible. There are better versions that speak in plain English upon which to draw your "Modern English".NIV aside, this just doesn't read or provoke you to go to your Bible. You read it and that's that. You don't study these truths that men of history have penned, loved and deemed as the 2nd most important piece of writing after the Bible. I was changed after reading the original WSC with scripture proofs and it deepened my understanding of man, God and why I am here. More importantly I have a deeper love for God, an understanding of the need to evangelize and a richer understanding of why I believe what I believe. And I have scripture to back it up.

Classic Catechism in modern language. Great for modern day teaching through the catechism without losing any of the value of the original.

I love these. I think I've bought 5 already; one for myself, one for my nephew, and one for each one of my sons. These are an excellent resource for learning the basics of what we as Christians need to know.

Since I don't build fiber cables on a daily basis I keep this book in front of me when I do build them. If you have never been taught to build fiber cables you can learn how from this book. However, you should note that building good fiber cables takes practice no matter how you learned to build them. Read this book carefully and you can do it.

I'm a pediatrician and a mother of two toddlers (a 3 y/o and an 18 mo old) and needed something to both help me out at work and with my own children. This is not a parenting guide -- it does not teach you how to parent, but it helps you to understand the mindset of your toddlers so that you can better interact with them. I use these principles on a daily basis with my children and do find them to be effective. I've also brought up several of these ideas to parents of toddlers at work and I feel like I see the light in their heads turn on when I explain certain things about their toddlers' behavior. I also found this book helped me to relax a little bit about my children -- sometimes my kids seem like little monsters, but this helps me understand their limitations and aid them in coping/life skills. Highly recommend!

I borrowed this book from the library after hearing the author on NPR, then bought two copies after that (one for me, one as a replacement when I gave that copy away) . I really like that her work is based on research and not simply opinion. It gave me a good idea of what "normal" toddler behavior was, and why it is that way. Also, at the end of the book there is a list that is like a "cliff notes" version of the book, summing up all her major points, which is helpful for a quick reference. Highly recommend it.

A friend recommended this book to me and I am so very grateful. My newly turned 3-year-old son, who has pretty much been a very independent sleeper from early in his life, suddenly began an intense phase of separation anxiety at bedtime about 2 weeks ago. I'm 36 weeks pregnant with his little brother and his father and I have been absolutely tearing our hair out, trying to figure out what to do and what happened to our easy-going little one. This book addresses these type of issues very thoroughly and also has a very important section on looking at ourselves and our own backgrounds as parents to see how our own upbringing affects how we interact with our children.

Lets be honest, no matter how fantastic your kid is, the toddler years can be a challenge. So this book is worth it if only for Chapter 6 which deals with tantrums and toddlers' favorite word: NO! This was a fairly easy read and I have recommended this book to my friends.

I am not quite finished reading this book but its great. It has helped me understand my granddaughter so much better. She is 20 months but in full blown toddler world with a strong personality. The book gives so much insight on things I never thought about in their development. I highly recommend it. My daughter-in-law wants to read it when I finished with it. .

This book gives incredible insight into parenting. As a mom I found myself at times second-guessing and wondering if I was doing the absolute best thing for my little one. I discovered the only way that I could find out is if I could learn a little bit more about how my toddler behaves and thinks. Dr. Klein is beyond insightful and her decades of experience with toddlers is evident in this book. This is such a great read, if this is the only book you find time to read you will be so grateful to have found it!

This book was so very helpful to me! Now I have confidence when dealing with my two year oldâ€™s tantrums, and can now usually prevent them in the first place! I am enjoying my daughter so much more, and am so happy I read this book early in her toddler years, so I can enjoy her more, and battle with her less. Iâ€™m looking at her in a whole new (helpful) light. Great book!

This book has been my bible â€” tons of insight that have made daily life with my son easier. My only quibble with it is that toddlerhood really begins at age 1, but this book only starts addressing age 2 and beyond.

It's interesting the political pressures he faces, the betrayals, the choices he has to make, his ambitious wife who's obsessed with power over principle. This book covers Nero, Galba, and Otho. The second one covers Vitelius and Vespasian. It's very entertaining, the battle scenes are realistic, and the political intrigue is fascinating.

The author has a well-paced, interesting novel with characters who have color and dimension and who are likeable. Of course, taking place in the Roman Empire during the time of The Four Caesars it is often brutal because that was a brutal time. Anyone who enjoys this novel should also read Tacitus' actual history of the events which, in fact, is as engaging as any novel. As an aside, it is also worth looking Rochegrosse's great painting of the Emperor Vitellius being dragged through the streets of Rome to be slaughtered on the Gemonian Stairs. Intense times.

This young author is destined to become one of the great authors of his generation. His first novel on the Roman Legions was well written, exciting and his characters were all fully developed. Our story is set in AD68 leading into AD69 the year of 4 Emperor.There are some great characterisations in the novel, I found Caecina not only a likeable main character but someone who I could personally relate too, Totavalas the slave, a character that I think will really come to the fore in the next book, I just wish he had been a little more in the slave mold, I don't think he would have lasted long with many masters with his mocking self-assured attitude, but you have to accept these character types as part of the passionate pace of the book and the writing style of the author.There may be `purists' out there that will be very critical of historical depiction the use of the right clothing and arms of the period in question. That said, it should not detract from what is a good first novel. For me it ticks two important boxes, namely action thriller and Historical Fiction based on the Roman Empire, as subject that has fascinated me since my school days reading the likes of Geoffrey and Henry Treece. I do recommend this book, it is written by a young and enthusiastic author who writes about a period time when Roman and the Empire were at a key junction in history, unless I am mistaken no other writer of Historical fiction has tacked this period in time.

The Last Caesar is an impressive debut novel which traces the deposition of Nero in AD68 and the Year of The Four Emperors which followed Nero's death. The story is narrated by Aulus Caecina Severus, a young army veteran from the war in Britannia and the campaign against Boudicca.The story is well set in its historical period with attention to the sort of details which are sometimes lacking in the historical genre. The story teller is a very human figure and the detailed account of his family, left behind initially in Rome, is well drawn and at times quite poignant in places. His friendships are also well caricatured and his many kindnesses to Quintus, son of a former enemy, are touching.The story proceeds at a good pace and there is plenty of action here. This means the book is quite hard to put down and is quite a page turner. The reader becomes very involved in the trials and tribulations of Severus as he seeks to advance his own interests, keep his family safe and stay on the winning side. It is a year of constant scheming and schisms in Rome and her far flung empire which makes it a dangerous time when even backing the right horse can end in mistrust and potential disaster.Severus rides it all with some aplomb, to culminate in an ending which clearly leaves unfinished business and leaves the way open for a sequel. When it does arrive it will certainly be high on my reading list.

Now â€˜Swimming in the Steno Pool...â€™ has definitely changed since women are now looked upon as equal instead of just â€œsteno takersâ€. I related so much to Lynn Perils previous â€œretroâ€ books. I do remember not getting what I was worth coming out of college, and I do remember bringing coffee to an exec when all he had to do was turn around and get it himself ðŸ˜‚ðŸ˜‚..but I also compared this to what many of my moms friends had to go through to make the same or close to the same money as their co workers who usually were men. So A LOT has changed yet NOT everything in the business world!! Excellent book!! I received it as a paperback & im so glad I did. Came exactly as described & in perfect condition!! 5 âï¸âï¸

As a woman of a certain age, I grew up during the period of time described in this book. It was a nostalgic (and sometimes hilarious) walk back through my working career. It was thoroughly enjoyable, and I intend to read it again!

This book was listed as humor but after reading about 1/5 of the book, I hadn't smiled once much less laughed. It was all about the history of stenos/secretaries and was so boring that I quit before I got very far into it.

As a former secretary and someone who knew Gregg shorthand I found the book a trip down memory lane. I don't think women realized (and that includes me) how lucky we were to have guaranteed employment if we had secretarial skills. Sadly, the profession was denigrated. Today, no one answers their mail, things are disorganized, we need to bring back secretaries!

So far it's been fun and informative - a great peek into the past!

This is one of my favorite theoretical books! I find Cohen's book offers great insight into monsters and why we both love and fear them. It's very relevant to border studies, the abject, third spaces and liminality. I return to it in my own work on a regular basis because not only is it innovative but very clear for critical theory. I highly recommend it.

This is a great foundational text for monster theory. I used several essays extensively for a graduate project and to create a unit plan for teaching my AP Lit class.

While I did have to buy this book for a class a few years ago, it is still a book I enjoy to read once a while to this day. It has many different helpful ways that can help expose a different way of thinking to a person and helps to open conversation in an area that most people donâ€™t seem to think about, especially talk about. I enjoyed the topic and the conversations it started very much.

Critical theory, in my view, often walks a line between providing real insight into art and society, and getting caught up in it's own self-referential obfuscation, substituting wordiness and word play for true insight. I think that's what has happened here. At least for me, I had to work too hard to find too little.I've read a lot of critical theory, and this type doesn't do it for me. But if you like theory to be art in itself, more about itself than the purported topic--in this case monsters and monstrosities--then you may, like the other reviewer, enjoy this work. But I prefer the work of Anijar, Barone, MacLaren, work that turns outward as well as inward.I suggest using the "look inside" feature to examine this book before buying. See if it's the flavor of critical theory that moves you.

Who didn't grow up on Shel Silverstein's A Light in the Attic?If you missed out, I am so sorry for you. My teacher read this to us in 5th and 6th grades and I loved hearing the whacky poems. If I hadn't already been in love with reading, this would have done it.Shel Silverstein's poetry is a must-have for anyone's home library - whether they are children or adults!

I ordered this for my 8 year old after we completed another Shel Silverstein book. She loves the different poems and entries in the book. I had these when I was younger and enjoyed them a lot, so I wanted her to get the same enjoyment. For the most part she can read this on her own with no help. There are some passages with difficult words to pronounce and also words that have the spelling somewhat changed or just a randomly made up word all together. This is a good buy for nightly bedtime story or just to pass time throughout the day. There are a mixture of funny passages and some serious ones, as well as ones that will leave you scratching your head because it made no sense or just seemed a little odd.

This is one of those books that should be considered mandatory reading for any child. I read this as a child and forgot about it until just a few years ago. A friend of mine had a child and when thinking of what might make a nice gift, I remembered how happy Shel Silverstein made me as a kid. You know it's good writing when you can remember verbatim the words (lyrics?) of certain poems (more specifically, the "twistable turnable man").Do your children a favor and get them this book. It's like fuel for their imagination.

Shel Silverstein is a great poet for children and adults. I grew up reading his poetry, and even now, as an adult, I continue to enjoy his writing. It is whimsical, funny, and many of his poems carry a deeper message (most of which went completely over my head as a kid). You won't regret Shel-ling out some money for this book!

My 5 year old daughter loves these books. I have fun reading the poems since I read them as a kid. I also like that most are pretty short so we can read for just a minute or longer when we have time.

The first copy of this book I ordered came with the cover ripped pretty badly but Amazon is wonderful with their customer service and I had a replacement in two days.I remember these books from when I was a kid. Checking them out at the library at school. So I wanted another copy. This is one of my favorites of his. I like the good color special edition cover that comes with this.Highly recommend all of his poem books.

Classic.From his humble writing beginnings in Playboy to his beloved children's poems Silverstein is a classic. Silverstein inspires imagination and whimsy. Decades later, I find myself reading these again with my daughter and I still love them. Now I can love them with a new generation.

Shel Silverstein books are my favorite! I loved reading them as a child. I was very happy to find them on Amazon for such a low price. I love the collection of poems in A Light in the Attic. I was very happy to find other Shel Silverstein books for a low price on this website as well. I am very glad I bought these books. Shel Silverstein wrote many fantastic poems and I can not wait to share them with my future children.

Love Shel Silverstein. His books are just magical. Would recommend everyone read any one of his books. Iâ€™m 49 and my mother is 76 and we gave these as gifts to one another. It was the best gift I received!

This book is a complete, unbiased, authoritative guide on stem cell research and its implications for the human race. Each issue in the topic is carefully, thoroughly, and fairly discussed in clear language.Each point of view, whether political or moral, is considered and weighed. The science behind this very complicated issue is clearly laid out in a manner simple enough for everyone to understand, yet complicated enough to satisfy doctors.I believe that this book should be required reading for anyone with an interest in the topic - which includes anyone and everyone who takes part in health care. This issue is not going to go away. In fact, it is going to become more and more important as science progresses.I wish I could give the book 10 stars. Bravo, Ms. Schneider and Dr. Goldstein!!

Good introduction to what is out there. There are new approaches but these have developed since this book was published.

This book should be entitled: "Embryonic Stem Cells for Dummies" because it only tells half of the story and omits the other half: Adult Stem Cells, and in particular how Autologous Stem Cell treatment using a patients own stem cells can work and are being used now, both in the US and internationally. If you are interested in a primer on Embryonic Stem Cells and research involving Embryonic Stem Cells, and the hoped for possibilities of future treatments (far far in the future) using Embryonic Stem Cells, then this is the book for you, and there is no question that the authors are certainly experts in the topic of embryonic stem cells. I bought this book to teach my son about stem cells because somewhere it said this was a "balanced" text, but it is not balanced at all and the authors, deeply entrenched in the "Embryonic Stem cells are better then adult stem cells" camp, present a disappointing one sided view of the field. Like I said above, the title is wrong. And for sure, if you are a potential patient as opposed to someone with academic curiosity this book is for sure not for you.But for knowledge of embryonic stem cells, it is an authoritative text.

Was super helpful for my research paper on ethical setbacks regarding stem cell research. The terms aren't as scientific as some of the other books out there so it was easier to read through and have a deeper understanding without having tons of background knowledge.

Enjoyed it greatly. Not too techie, so good for people like me with little science or medical learning. Some 'repeating', but not all that bad.

Great introductory book on Stem Cells. Perfect for a person looking for a basic understanding of the different types of cells and the basic techniques to create different stem cells.

The title of the book "Wild Ways" is apt for the legendary Japanese Zen Monk Ikkyu (1394 - 1481)who wrote poetry, drank frequently, found truth in brothels, and was deadly serious about Zen meditation. He was disgusted with the hypocrisy of fame-and-fortune Zen and frequently ridiculed them. He shunned temple life and mingled with all manner of people. But at age 80 he was asked to become the head abbot of the most important Zen Temple of Japan Daitoku-ji which he succeeded in rebuilding after it had been destroyed in a war. He died at age 87 while sitting in a lotus pose.His Rinzai Zen master Kaso gave him the name "Ikkyu" which roughly means "one pause" after he penetrated and understood a koan at age 24. He achieved enlightenment at age 26. But Ikkyu preferred to call himself "crazy cloud" and his master Kaso concurred when he said " Ikkyu is my true heir, but his ways are wild".A Crazy Cloud, out in the openBlown about madly, as wild as they come!Who knows where this cloud will go, wherethe will will still?The sun rises from the eastern sea, and shinesover the land."Wild Ways" is a selection of more than a thousand poems he wrote. He writes freely about sex which comes across as raw and in your face, his beloved Mori, and struggles of hermit life. In the end, it contains the famous "Skeleton" poem in its entirety with pencil sketches which adds a beautiful touch. Skeleton is the haunting expression of the classical Buddhist theme No beginning, no end, emptiness of emptiness.MemoriesFlee andAnd are no more:All are empty dreamsDevoid of meaningIf you enjoy this translation by John Stevens, you will enjoy my other favorite Japanese poet Ryokan, also translated by John Stevens.If Ryokan was a gentle curling fog on the mountain side, Ikkyu was the lashing storm.

I am a huge fan of Ikkyu. I totally enjoyed reading these poems, however it is merely not my favorite collection, having a lot fewer of those poems which instantly strike you to yr core. However, I have come to enjoy the creative, different formatting of the book--and to be accurate--there are several gems of thought to be found here.

My favorite Zen master

This little book of poems and drawings by Ikkyu is a total delight. A wild free sensuous crazy Zen monk left us these terrific drawings and poems of his unemcumbered life, yet he was , in my view, a very deep Zen Buddhist living every moment, savoring it, suffering through it, and moving on. The last part is a long famous poem Skeletons worth reading and rereading.

If Ikkyu is of interest to you, this book is a must.It contains multiple, short poems by the master. Also, it contains some of his very best work -- inspiring, beautifully written and well translated.Artists of any kind will like this book a great deal.

I have very much been enjoying the book. It is a great representation of Ikku Zen Poetry. Well translated, and adapted for the west. If you like Ikkus zen poetry I recommend the book.

I was excited to get this, as there are only two versions of Ikkyu's poetry in English currently in print, the other being Crow With No Mouth, translated by Stephen Berg. The Berg translation definitely set me up for a letdown with this. These translations are written in a form that is alien to Japanese poetry, and have so much superfluous language that the spirit of Ikkyu, resilient as it is, ends up buried beneath it all. Take, for example, this translation by Stevens:Ten days in this temple and my mind is reeling!Between my legs the red thread stretches and stretches.If you come some other day and ask for me,Better look in a fish stall, a sake shop, or a brothel.Compared with Berg's version:Ten fussy days running this temple all red tapeLook me up if you want to in the bar whorehouse fish marketNot only is Berg's infinitely more beautiful and sensitive, but you can see that Stevens actually totally mistranslates the line about red tape. The "red thread" he is referring to is the red thread school of Zen, which viewed sexual intimacy as a religious rite (Ikkyu was known to wear his monk's robe in brothels). But clearly Ikkyu is not referring to the red thread here, and it completely alters the meaning of the poem.These translations completely miss the mark. Luckily enough of Ikkyu's extralingual sensibility shines through to make it not a total waste of money, but only for the few poems in here that are not available in the Berg translation.Long story short: this is not the poetry of Ikkyu. Get Berg's translation, or better yet, learn Japanese!

(And maybe urge the amazon reviews-reviewer to somehow link or transfer them to this listing.) This is a wonderful small book, one of the White Pines Companions. There's a small introduction. About 75 poems. Also, the complete Skeletons, a zen prose and poem treatise. Also, there are several poor quality black and white woodblock prints from older Japanese editions. Currently, this is one of two books of translations reasonably available for purchase. There is also a popular book of transliterations. There are a few older books available if you're willing to pay close to a hundred dollars or if you can find them in a library (good luck). I'd suggest this is the one to buy first though. And enjoy. For Ikkyu is a singularity.
