There have been many histories of early Australia. Some, like Hughes' Fatal Shore, emphasise blood and the lash in convict discipline. Others concentrate on the actions of officials, showing the march of civilisation across a new land.This book is of an entirely new kind. It is interdisciplinary and multi-sourced. The author relies on drawings, paintings and visits to the landscapes, as well as the usual official and unofficial written sources. No matter how well read in the subject of early Sydney, every reader will find something new here.This is history from below as well as from above. Aborigines play much more of a role than mere background to the "real" story, that of convicts, officials and free settlers. The well-known stories of the war on the Cumberland plain are told, but so are stories about the interactions of Aborigines and the new arrivals, of the intermixing of their work and languages.There is nothing one-dimensional about this book: it lashes Fatal Shore for its author's falling for propaganda of the period, but Karskens does not deny the brutality sometimes evident in the British system of discipline. It is books like this which are the best advertisement for the slow reading movement.

Grace Karskens has done an amazing amount of research, going back to original documents and bringing a new perspective to many of the traditional, and oft repeated, rumours about the eary history of NSW. It is a must-read for anyone truely interested in early Australian history and the things that have shaped the current thinking in Aus. Although it weighs a lot, this book is hard to put down!

This book demonstrates the quality of Ms Karskens research as well as her skills at gently explaining in her narrative about 'The Colony'. After looking at the projects in the book, I found that too many tools [tube cutter, saw/miter, drills, etc] are needed. The book has loads of pictures but these projects are not what I was looking for with resin.

The main reason I purchased this book was because the description read "jewelry makers will learn to fold and form resin into lightweight and dramatic cuffs … " Although there are good ideas in the book, there was NOTHING about folding and forming resin. I wanted to learn how to manipulate resin to create a free form bracelet, which is what I thought the book would include, since it mentioned "folding resin to make dramatic cuffs." The only folding in the book involved using polymer clay. I think the title of the book is misleading; it should have said Resin and Polymer Clay.

Would buy again.

My husband was diagnosed with congestive heart failure last fall and put on a low sodium diet. I have followed low fat, low carb, low calorie diets and thought I was nutritionally aware. After spending hours reading labels in the grocery store, I was shocked and angry by the amounts of sodium being fed to us. Thankfully I had spent the summer canning a large amount of garden produce - with no salt - but since I was afraid to buy ANYTHING in the grocery store or order anything in a restaurant anymore, I envisioned a lifetime of canned veggies! I was delighted although somewhat skeptical when I received this book. The first thing my husband requested when he came home from the hospital was a taco salad. I found the Mexican Seasoning and Taco Salad recipes and tried them - absolutely awesome. I am (hopefully was) a saltaholic and did not miss it at all. Have made numerous recipes from the book and although I have found one or two not to my taste - 95% are incredible. Thank you Thank you Thank you. This book lives on my kitchen counter - never in 3 months has it been put away and I recommend it to everyone I know.

I bought this for my 88 year old g-ma. She had to drastically cut back on her sodium intake. She didnt know where to start. In comes this book, delivered to her front door! She loves everything she's tried. Ingredients are in her cabinet. The shepards pie is a weekly thing at her house. I recommend this book for tasty low sodium recipes!😊👍

I need to keep my sodium intake low due to an inner ear condition. I ordered seven low sodium cookbooks, and this is the one my wife latched on to as the best of the bunch. It has great substitutes for high-sodium items like soy sauce, and is a great reference - even though it is a bit dated. As an example, a low-sodium soy sauce was mentioned along with a source; unfortunately the soy sauce is no longer available and neither is the store that carried it. None the less, it told me there were soy sauces out there that are truly low in sodium and with the aid of a search engine I was able to track some down.

This book is a 'must have' book for anyone on a low sodium diet. My dad can only have 1500 mg of sodium daily and this book actually makes it easy! I now make his chili powder, Mexican seasonings, rib/meat rub, mustard and mayonnaise - and it is a very simple, quick process. Wonderful 'normal' recipes - meat loaf, a gourmet hamburger, etc. Chapters divided by meat type and also by ethnic types (Mexican, Asian, etc). I bought my dad's doctor a copy of this book so he could recommend it to his patients, it's that good. This copy was purchased for my butcher's wife who just had a baby and discovered she had an enlarged heart. The book enables anyone to eat good tasting food and still maintain a low sodium diet. Wonderful!!!

This is a great cookbook. I am an avid cook. My husband's low salt diet seemed like it would be a low taste one - but amazingly using Dick L's recipes has meant we have good food. I haven't even gotten the salt shaker out to flavor up my portions. There are plenty of comfort foods that taste great. The low salt bread machine recipes came out really well - which was a surprise to me since I had always thought salt was a necessity for proper bread. Every recipe I've prepared so far has been excellent. He has included little tricks and ingredients that make you not miss the salt.If you are newly diagnosed with any kind of illness that necessitates a low salt diet - you need this cookbook. He includes complete nutrition information for every recipe (including sodium and potassium).

I own a few low-sodium cookbooks, and this is the one I use most often. It is full of recipes that are easy to make, and that are actually useful. One of my favorites is Sesame Chicken. I make that about once a week. It also has a small collection of low-sodium bread machine recipes that I use often. My only criticism is that there seem to be a lot of mistakes in the recipes. For example, one bread machine recipe calls for two tablespoons of yeast, which is far too much. I'm sure it is supposed to say two teaspoons. Also, in some instances, the author's website ([...]) will include a recipe that is in the book, but the amounts of the ingredients differ, often confusing teaspoons and tablespoons. There have been two instances when I've emailed the author to verify the ingredients in a recipe. On one occasion, he replied to tell me there was an error. The other time he did not reply. All in all, I'd say this is a must-have cookbook in the low salt category. Just watch for any ingredients that seem suspicious.

Without question, this is the best low sodium book on the market, and I think I have them all. I had to change my diet to very low sodium, and this book helped me to still enjoy my food. The bread recipes are the best, and they are simple enough that even a inexperienced baker can make them, though I recommend to bake the bread in the oven vs. the bread machine (if you have one). Most recipes are close to regular homemade food, and most of the ingredients are available in local stores. This cookbook helped me to "learn" the low sodium way well enough that I can now experiment with his and my recipes to add variety. Thank you Dick Logue.

John Steinbeck, born in Salinas, California, in 1902, grew up in a fertile agricultural valley, about 25 miles from the Pacific Coast. Popular success and financial security came only with Tortilla Flat (1935), stories about Monterey’s paisanos. A ceaseless experimenter throughout his career, Steinbeck changed courses regularly. Three powerful novels of the late 1930s focused on the California laboring class: In Dubious Battle (1936), Of Mice and Men (1937), and the book considered by many his finest, The Grapes of Wrath (1939). The Grapes of Wrath won both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize in 1939.Steinbeck received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962, and, in 1964, he was presented with the United States Medal of Freedom by President Lyndon B. A very thorough travel journal with timeless reflections on human nature mixed with in each chapter. I say timeless because what Steinbeck wrote in the late 1930s and early 1940s seems to apply as much then as it does now. Though the descriptions can be a bit long sometimes, it was a eloquent travel journal – perhaps the best I've ever read.

If you intend to read Steinbeck's Sea of Cortez you can do it two ways. You can order this book, Sea of Cortez, and get the full benefit of Steinbeck and Rickett's exploration of the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez), or you can order the Log, which only contains Steinbeck's observations and color commentary, leaving out Rickett's technical information. If you are a fan of Steinbeck, the log is both entertaining and informative and pure Steinbeck in that he exhibits that meandering curiosity that began here (1941) but was still evident in Travels with Charley twenty years later. To get the full effect of the voyage, however, this is the book you want. This is non-fiction Steinbeck, so don't expect Mice and Men or Grapes of Wrath. Still, I read the whole Sea of Cortez more than two decades ago and had to come back and order both the Log and the entire Sea of Cortez, just to be sure I have it on my shelf again.

This book is a narrative account of a 1930's marine life collecting voyage from Cabo San Lucas north, and includes both John Steinbeck's recollections and the marine biology appendices prepared by Ed Ricketts dscribing the marine life collected and preserved. The book is an excellent introduction to the east coast of the south baja peninsula, and is an helpful preparation for a current day cruise in the same locale. I was fortunate on such a cruise taken in January 2010 to have on board an interpreter who compared current day marine life in a given collecting area with that presented in this book. While some harbors, such as Cabo San Lucas, no longer support the specimens described in the book, many of the collecting sites still have a considerable diversity of marine life...and the bay north of Cabo supported the largest number of whale sightings of our week long trip. Once north of Cabo, population density decreases and the offshore islands - which are largely protected wildlife zones - provide a landscape very similiar to that seen in the 1930s. This book coupled with a cruise of this coast are a marvelous way to get a break from winter cold in the USA.

Amazing. I’m a bit biased as a huge Steinbeck fan and a marine biologist but the philosophy and deeper thoughts in this book are quite profound no matter what your background is.

Always liked Steinbeck and this was no exception. Fascinating and easy to read. Learned a lot.

Purchased this book for my husband who had heard about it and was interested in knowing more about the Sea of Cortez. He is loving reading this book and truly enjoys the way Steinbeck wrote it. He finds it fascinating, full of information and a very interesting read. We would highly recommend it.

Needed to replace this book as I had given my copy to a friend: lovely reading.

I am a huge fan of New York in the Gilded Age so I was really excited when I saw this book, but I did wonder if it was going to tell me anything I didn't already know. I am not averse to having books that share information, but I didn't want to rehash everything.The book absolutely did no disappoint. While there is a lot of information here that can be found in other places, a lot of it was new to me. More important, however, was the variety of information included. I won't call this the definitive book of it's kind, but it is certainly thorough.The author uses Mrs. Astor as an axis for telling the story of society during the Gilded Age, but doesn't limit the information to the years when Mrs. Astor was at the peak of her reign nor to high society. The book covers every aspect of life from servants and household management to entertainment and political concerns.I received an electronic copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. But I loved it so much that I ordered it in hard copy.

This is an interesting and comprehensive guide to the manners and daily lives of "the 400", but I found myself distracted by all the errors.There were errors of fact: the "Emerald Isle" is Ireland, not England; "Endicott Peabody, whose first and last names signified family prominence dating to the founding of the Pilgrims in 1619" - the Pilgrims weren't "founded" in 1619, that was simply the name used by those who sailed on the Mayflower in 1620. (The first Endicott didn't arrive until 1628; the first Peabody in 1635).There were editing errors as well: the Spanish-American War ended in 1898, not 1998; journalists sowed public distrust, not "sewed"; and "Episcopal Christian" is redundant.Frustrating reading.

Fun read

This was quite an enjoyable read! “What Would Mrs. Astor Do?” covers an eclectic group of topics on the etiquette and norms of the wealthiest New Yorkers during Gilded Age. It gives the reader an inside view of how one achieved social status during this period and what the consequences of such status could be. The book makes it clear that acceptance into the elite group of monied New Yorkers (Mrs. Astor’s list of 400) required much more than simply money and wealth. While certainly, money was a prerequisite for the list, that was only one of the requirements! Even if one had money, it had to be the right type of money. That, of course, would be “old money”. And once again, that alone would not be enough if one did not then subscribe to the absolute rules, etiquette, and acceptable norms of behavior. Mrs. Astor was considered the ultimate authority and arbitrator on the rules, so when in doubt simply think, “What Would Mrs. Astor Do?” And mind you, we are not talking simply table manners here! The rules cover almost every aspect of life from the proper way for a gentleman to walk down the street, to how to approach your box seat at the opera, to the final test of good taste, one’s funeral! “What Would Mrs. Astor Do” is an entertaining as well as an insightful book. I could not read the book without thinking where we have come from and where we are. And while the world has so changed and Mrs. Astor is clearly gone, I am not sure her rules or at least the spirit of those rule are! I was honored to receive a copy of this book from NetGalley and the Publisher New York University Press in exchange for an honest review.

What Would Mrs Astor Do? by Cecelia Tichi is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in late October.Manners used between the 1870s-1910s for household amenities, social activities, accessorizing, eating, and transportation in tandem with then-modern scandals, popular personalities, industrial advancements, and pop culture occurrences. With this in mind, Tichi switches topics very quickly, like interior and architectural design (usually mimicking European estates), taking cues from other opulent households and etiquette guidebooks, some families refusing to use phones due to them ‘not being human,’ wearing the correct hat or clothing for an occasion, vocal and written eloquence, raising children, as well as eating dinner and drinks inside and outside of one’s home. The scandals and money management info at the end feel kind of like an afterthought with the overall structure of the book otherwise following etiquette.

Maybe make 3 to 5 varieties of your favorites when your making loves making flavorful sandwiches. I was surprised when it features Filipino pimiento cheese spread which is kind of tasty. This cookbook list over 200 sandwich spreads that are found in every food category and are found in households worldwide either in Latin America, Europe, Asia, Australia, Canada and the United States.The author also gives emphasis on key ingredients like spices and herbs, equipment to use, and gives you the endless possibilities to make your own sandwich spreads for you or maybe on your next party.

I thought this was a great idea for a recipe collection but it was quite a disappointment.Yes, there are a lot of recipes for various sandwich spreads, which is what I expected throughout, given the title but there are a some recipes that aren't.For example:a recipe for homemade: Condensed Milk ...which by the way contains a whooping 4 CUPS of sugar. I can't really imagine spreading that on a piece of bread. ;-) Unless you need a serious sugar fix. Very unhealthy too.A lot of recipes are just embellishing a cup or more of mayo with some herbs, spices etc...not all that original.On the plus side, I did pick out a few recipes that I would consider trying such as the: Pistachio Tapenade but overall, not much that appealed here.This eBook also needs a proof read in a big way. The capitalization of the names of ingredients and some of the rather strange wording, was distracting throughout.

I also have a hungry teenaged son and a husband who works irregular - actually, chaotic - hours as a professional musician. The amount I spend on Foodler deliveries each month would shock you, especially if you knew how careful we have to be with our budget, but it is rock meet hard place around here trying to balance our money budget with my ability/energy budget.This cookbook is a big help. The recipes are easy to make and clean up after. The finished products are easy to keep around so that my kid can feed himself when he is hungry. And many of them are unique as well as delicious - stuff I never would have thought of - made from stuff I already have. MFK Fisher would be proud.

I love this cookbook! It's the first book I got where I actually read the ingredients and the directions and felt that I could really do them. In fact, for a kitchen layman such as me, the names alone of some of these recipes sounded too exotic and quite intimidating, but it is all made simple in this practical cookbook and I couldn’t believe what I was able to prepare and how easy it all had been. I love the book because with it I can fool people into thinking that I actually know how to cook! Or maybe now I do know something?

Those I have already tried (and they are quite a few) are simply marvelous! This is a cookbook about sandwich spreads, but that’s quite an understatement, since you can use these unbelievable recipe ideas for practically anything you want to prepare: It will help you make a much better sandwich that’s for sure, but it can also help you improve you pot roast, liven up your salads, diversify the finger food you serve guests and so much more than that. I guess you have to try it to catch my meaning.I really appreciated the practicality of this book. The introduction is well-written and informative, and when you go to the recipes, they're clear and to the point so that you know exactly what you need to do without the usual irrelevant chatter- love it! The recipes are well laid out and the directions are simple and clear.The recipes are well enough written that a novice could follow them, and interesting enough for a skilled cook to enjoy. Most of them use ingredients already in most well-stocked kitchens.Oh! I almost forgot the bread baking booklet sent to readers as a gift for buying the cookbook - Simple recipes for bakery grade breads anyone can make on his own – now that’s a lovely side dish to the main spreads cookbook!I truly recommend 201 special recipes for sandwich spread, and hope that you enjoy it as much as I have!

Found this cookbook great as a summer activity for my kids!!!Each one chose a spread to prepare. My daughter chose from the sweet ones of course.... my son a salty one.Prepared and used it next day on our sandwitches!!!Nicely written!!Healthy!!!Tasty!!!
