About the Author

Susan Anderson is a Los Angeles based commercial, editorial, and fine art photographer, specializing in portraiture, beauty, fashion, and conceptual/narrative work. Having earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree form the prestigious Art Institute of Chicago, Anderson relocated to Los Angeles in 2001. Her work has appeared in a variety of magazines including Los Angeles, People, Glamour, The Robb Report, and Playboy. Her fine-art work is represented by TORCH Gallery in Amsterdam and Patrick Painter Inc. Gallery in Los Angeles. Simon Doonan is a writer, bon vivant, fashion commentator, and window-dresser. He writes a column for the New York Observer entitled, "Simon Says." He has also written four books including Confessions of a Window Dresser (Studio, 1998), and Eccentric Glamour (Simon & Schuster, 2008). The photographs in this book will haunt you for a very long time, so be prepared. It's also the quantity that makes it so gripping.Brilliant pictures, yes. Very glamourous; I am sure the girls and their families will love this book. But there are different ways the pictures can be interpretedand that makes it such a good book.There are the names and ages of the girls but they don't match. You have to do a double take: This girl is 6 years old??? Three???You could also see it as a study on the early age society starts demanding girls to be obsessed with their looks.Look for yourself, and wonder: Should this be allowed? What is this teaching the girls? At the same time you will see beautiful pictures of beautiful girls, too much make up and a lot of fake smiles. Very intriguing and thought provoking. I loved it!

I purchased this book expecting it to be jam packed with interviews, behind the scenes fun facts and an overall introduction to the world of child beauty pageants. Sort of like Toddlers and Tiaras but in book form. Wow, was I disappointed. The book is nothing but glamour shots of young girls. I'm trying to understand what the appeal of the book is? Who would buy this knowing what the content is? I'm embarrassed to have it in my home.

This book is all photographs great for a reference guide if your wanting to get into mega glitz but not very informative

I thought I was going to throw this across the room when I came to the old song of "I became a vegetarian when I realized Harold the chicken had a personality," but I kept on just see what would happen.Hughes goes on to say that her family has since reversed and now eats more beef, etc., for health reasons. I like her writing not because she eats meat, but because she not only changes her position based on more information, she is totally OK with your making your own decisions.Do you want to be vegan? She's OK with that. But she also explains other food options, such as insects, being a localvore, and 3D printed food. (Yes, you read that right.) Hughes goes through food history and touches on such subjects as pesticides, organics, and gluten with respect for the fact that much of we eat is fashion, but works hard at providing science.Good source notes. Nice index and glossary. Good "further reading" section. And at 96 pages, it just barely makes it but will generally be acceptable for kids and teens doing homework.

At least some of the 'facts' they present are based on folklore, thus I wonder how much of the information in this book is actual fact and how much is based on erroneous data. The authors are clearly Evolutionary believers and so all of their history is slanted in that direction. They also didn't bother to do actual research into other believe systems to get actual facts to support their presumptions. I borrowed this book for my son but I did not let him read it. Question about this book is it Non-Fiction or Fiction?
