Do you blame God for the pain and suffering in this world? Are you ready to reconcile your sense of a loving God with the tragedy and abuse you have experienced, heard about, and observed? Would you like to know what to say, and perhaps more importantly what not to say to hurting people? Like these questions, the title of Thomas Oord’s new book, God Can’t, is attention-grabbing but make no mistake, this book is neither dime-store nor armchair theology. In this book, Oord makes accessible a profound contribution to Christian theology which offers good news to us today. He relates his deeper wisdom and life-long scholarship on a level all of us can understand and benefit from. God Can't re-opens the door to divine relationship for countless numbers of people who have left the church, or never entered, unable to reconcile evil with a God who they have been told is both all-powerful and all-loving yet who has failed to prevent suffering and abuse. In God Can’t, Oord offers a solution to the problem of evil. God’s essential nature is love, which Oord defines as acting intentionally to promote overall well-being. He defines evil as useless and pointless pain and suffering. Because a loving God could never allow abuse and evil, Oord concludes God simply cannot stop evil by acting alone. God can use suffering to bring about good but God does not cause or allow it. Rather, God is continually working to heal to the utmost in every moment, given the circumstances of life, the past, and our free will choices. A radical shift from the concept of God we have been taught in many Christian circles, this is a god with whom we can give and receive love without fear, a god worthy of our devotion.Oord makes his case using real-life stories, explaining scripture, challenging problematic dogma touted by the well-meaning, and correcting misconceptions about God which inflict more harm than help. Oord’s concept of God calls us to listen for the divine aim and respond by participating with the divine in works of grace. If you are looking for a bible study book, God Can’t is not it. However, Oord addresses some of the bible passages often used to portray God as a vengeful judge, a detached creator, or a controlling parent. He shows us a very different God of compassion and empathy relentlessly working for our best, and demonstrates the consistency of this image with the Bible and its overarching message of love. While this book includes a clear message comprehensible to anyone, if you seek a more in-depth approach, I encourage you to next read Oord’s earlier book, The Uncontrolling Love of God. His other publications offer nuance to his central theme of God as love, affectionately earning him the title of “Dr. Love†among his university students and colleagues. This seminal text should not be confused with Uncontrolling Love: Essays Exploring the Love of God. The book of essays demonstrate the application of Oord’s views by others with varying degrees of success and show us the journey to revising our ideas about God is anything but a simple straight line.Be advised, truly absorbing the meaning of Oord’s message in God Can’t will cause some dissonance. You may experience guilt from having expressed unhelpful opinions, such as “Everything happens for a reason†and “It’s all part of God’s plan†to yourself and others who have lived through abuse and tragedy. You may have to take responsibility for your role in creating a better world. More than anything, though, you will feel healing begin in your soul and in your life and you will find encouragement and hope. You will see God and the world more coherently. You will find your ideas about God becoming more emotionally and intellectually rational and you will be able to feel and experience God’s grace in a new way.
Tom Oord carefully, thoughtfully, and helpfully offers a view of God that genuinely wrestles with the problem of evil in our world. His clear writing, grounded in real life happenings, gives hope and encouragement to the wondering and wounded. I strongly recommend it as the best gift book to a friend who is struggling.
God Can’t is a phenomenal, ground-breaking, and loving way into being transformed by God’s infinite love for each of God’s creatures. Let the edgy title of Tom Oord’s latest treasure draw you toward learning more about the mutual love relationship God desires with each of us. Page by page, feel the Holy Spirit whispering affirmatively as you gain clarity on what that infinite and unimaginable Love can mean in your life. Dare to be transformed by the radical idea that God’s uncontrolling love makes possible a new understanding of God alive in us, actively, with us, changing our lives into stronger reflections of God’s love. No matter how deeply or how recently you have suffered, discover anew what Love’s power might awaken in your soul, in the deepest part of you that can never be separated from God. Let Love’s Teacher speak to you through Oord’s exciting and inspiring ideas about God who can only love, and how through our co-suffering, co-healing, and co-operating, we might bring about a renewed and transformed world.
This book is outstanding, practical, applicable, personally challenging and sobering as it woos readers to recognize and respond to the uncontrolling love of God who can’t. It also helps us to understand God’s need for us who can, as “…our contributions are essential to establishing overall well-being†(p. 156). Personally, this message of a God who can’t is good news! As a survivor who has experienced abuse, in the depths of my own despair, I asked tough questions of God, such as: “where were you when I was being abused? Why don’t you heal my Father of his cancer? Why would you not intervene in such mass evil events as 9/11? How can you even be a loving God if you can look at all the evil and tragedy in our world and not intervene?†I am all too familiar with these questions in my own life and in the lives of those with whom I work as a therapist. These existential questions regarding matters of theodicy (the problem of evil) are inherently human questions. We often try to rationalize and understand a loving God, while at the same time trying to make sense of our lived experiences of tragedy, abuse and other evils. When our questions go unanswered and our assessments do not add up, we are either left with claiming God and God’s ways as a “mystery,†or claiming that God is “no longer interested in our affairs in this world†and/or is “unloving.†However, what if our notion of God as all-powerful or all-knowing, and our understanding of God as a God who can, is misconstrued? What if, God can’t? If you have found yourself asking similar questions, wondering where God is, how God relates, how to understand God in light of your lived experiences, and wondering if your life matters, I encourage you to read this book. I challenge you to face the tough questions that Oord tackles in his book. I recommend that you wrestle with these questions in order to come to understand and know the God who can’t, yet who needs us and our loving responses in order to establish well-being and wholeness within ourselves and others. This understanding of God being the God who can’t and who needs us, brings with it a sense of sobering responsibility, as well as a hopeful message that our lives and our loving responses really do matter, not only for our own well-being but for the overall well-being of humanity and the universe it self. This is good news! Reading this book and gaining further understanding of the God who can’t has brought me to a deeper understanding of my own responsibility in lovingly responding to and cooperating with God. This book has challenged me to reevaluate my understanding and relationship with God, self, others and the world. Further, it has encouraged me professionally in reconfirming my desire and goal to help others in their own healing as they struggle with these existential questions and possibly learn to embrace a God who can’t. If you are looking for similar challenges that will affect how you think of yourself, as well as your relationship to God, others and the world, please take the time to read this book and respond to the questions at the end of each chapter. You are not alone in your questions and your wonderings. Know that some of what is said in this book may at first be uncomfortable– you may possibly even go through a grieving process regarding the God who can, but in the end, my hope for you is that what you will find is the invitation to participate in indispensable love synergy with an uncontrolling loving God who works with us to squeeze good out of the tragedies, traumas and other evils that were never meant to happen in the first place.
