I compare Lonely Planet and Eyewitness with the Rough Guide and picked the Rough Guide because it was:- comprehensive (had all the key cities and regions)- had detailed city maps and local transportation info (in addition to hotel and restaurants)In comparison, Eyewitness was too brief to the point of little or no value (it had nice pictures of course that were not relevant to my destinations); it also didn’t cover in sufficient detail all the key spots in Mexico. Lonely Planet focused on hotels and restaurants and was light on sites and barely any maps and even fewer pics. The Rough Guide was the Goldilocks of the available books. Though not perfect, it was enough for us to reference generally where to go and what to prioritize, which we can then fill in online for other details.
Rough Guides have always offered lots of first hand reporting and lots of opinion to go with. This Rough Guide to Mexico is no exception. Mexico is a surprisingly big country with lots of variety in terms of culture, physical geography, history, entertainment, and adventure. It is also a place in which certain portions of the country have become dangerous through continuing drug cartel violence. And it is a country in which the rule of law might mean something a little different than it might north of the Rio Bravo.This is a hefty guide, but after an introduction and some travel basics, it offers a great breakout of Mexico by geographic area. Mexico City rates its own chapter, as does the austerely beautiful Baja California. The chapters contain details on attractions, history, culture, and practicalities like where to stay, what to eat, how to get around, and how to get along. There are lots of interesting details about Pacific coast beach towns, Aztec temples in the mountains of the interior, and the jungles and the remains of the Maya civilization in the Yucatan Peninsula. The text is interwoven with some nice color photographs and maps of regions and some cities. All in all, this guide is a great basic resource for planning a first visit to Mexico.
Great. Absolutely up to date. All the relevant information about ALL !!!! of Mexico. At least it seems like that. Safety tips and secret spots are as well part of the package. Will come in very handy as soon as van life on the open road begins for us.

Very useful. I had little time to prepare for my holiday in Mexico, and this book provided useful guidance especially on what to see and where to go.
Got some fundamental things wrong, like calling Mexico City not bike friendly. It's one of the most bike friendly cities I've ever been to, with a massive bike sharing program and great bike lanes.
