From School Library Journal
Adult/High School—This well-written, copiously illustrated, slender volume would be a necessary addition to school and public libraries even if there was no narrative, because its outstanding photographs and other graphics are worth the purchase price alone. Bell's writing, however, adds immeasurably to the value of this atlas: it is articulate, clear, informative, and, above all, accurate. The author begins with a succinct history of ballooning and segues to a valuable account of those attempting to master heavier-than-air flight, ending with Orville and Wilbur Wright and their essential innovations and inventions. He covers the relatively slow improvements in airplanes between 1903 at Kitty Hawk and the guns of August 1914, lingering after 1914 on improvements to airplanes during World War I and the interwar period. World War II receives brilliant treatment with subchapters, among others, on the critical Battle of Britain, strategic bombardment, and the cross-Channel invasion at Normandy. Aviation in post-World War II conflicts—the Cold War, Korea, Vietnam, and the Gulf Wars—is amply treated. Two elements make Bell's book unique: his substantial coverage of civilian aviation and his graphic treatment of aviation's peripherals: maps, charts, air-traffic control, etc. Teens will understand, enjoy, and appreciate this book.—Alan Gropman, National Defense University, Washington, DC Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. I was very happy and surprised to see an encyclopedia based on maps and geography. A novel approach. However, there are many pages with typographical errors, mis-labeling names of aircraft, and misspellings of place names. Apparently proofreading was not in the budget for this book. Nevertheless, since I love geography and maps, every time I find a typo, I just read around it in my mind and continue reading. Some examples of mistakes/typos are:p. 163: map has misspellings: Gaton Airfield should be spelled Gatow Airfield, which was in the British Zone of Berlin. Fulva Range Station should be spelled Fulda. Fritzlar is closer to Fulda than indicated on the map. Staden is in Belgium, not Germany.p.165: The photo labelled B-26 Invader is incorrect. The airplane is the A-26 Invader
Dana Bell has created an interesting, compelling and authoritative work that is truly fascinating. He has combined aviation history and geography through the use of maps to augment the text and photos. The history of aviation comes alive in these pages like I've never seen before. Highly recommended!
Although there are a few noticeable gaps, the text and pictures in the book provide a good survey of the material.
Great flying book:BEST ERVER SEEN!!!!
The book is a great read for any aviation enthusiast. There are better aviation history books out there, depending on what you're looking for, but this is one of the better ones.
My book came quickly and it was in excellent shape. It was relatively cheap compared to the other options. Thanks!
