About the Author
Stephen Arroyo (born October 6, 1946 in Kansas City, Missouri) is an American author and astrologer. Arroyo has written seven books on psychologically oriented astrology which outline his theory that the individual's experience of the Solar System's impacts on their personal energy field, both psychological and physical. His works recast astrological concepts in psychological terms, and reject what he perceives as the fatalism and negativity of old-fashioned astrology. His books have now been translated into 20 languages. Regarding his written works, the Library Journal stated: "The simplicity and clarity of his treatment of complex ideas is remarkable; it makes accessible even to the beginner a wealth of understanding....giving meaningful psychological grounding to astrological interpretation."[citation needed] Arroyo has been guest speaker at events in the North America and Europe, and has taught astrology courses in the United States. He has been awarded the British Astrological Association Astrology Prize, the Fraternity of Canadian Astrologers' International Sun Award, and the United Astrology Congress's Regulus Award. He has an honors degree in literature from the University of California and a Masters Degree in Psychology. Previous occupations include marriage counseling, and the practice of a homeopathy and polarity therapy.

This book, like all of Arroyo's astrology books, is incredibly insightful and should be read by every astrologer (though it's probably best to tackle at the intermediate level rather than as a beginner). I don't share the author's take on every topic, but he is one of my favorite astrologers to read and I always benefit from his writing. He has made me a better astrologer in so many ways. My only real complaint is that Arroyo often skips a lot of information, saying the content has already been adequately covered by other authors, and including footnotes with their books and pamphlets. Since the book was first published in the 70's, a lot of those books/pamphlets are out of print and tough to find. This can leave some pretty big holes that are hard to fill more than 30 years later. In any case, this book (ALL of Arroyo's books) should be on every astrologer's shelf; whether your style is similar to his or completely different, you will definitely grow as an astrologer.
Stephen Arroyo has become my favorite writer on astrology. He takes the topic at issue a step further than the general teachings without loosing the reader in a sea of abstraction.This book in particular helped me readjust my attitude to the socalled ‘inharmonious’ aspects which Arroyo instead prefer to call ‘dynamic and challenging’ aspects, because the experience of these aspects often depends on our willingness to learn from them. The greatest joy can come from them when one learns to deal with the energies in play.Uranus, Neptune and Pluto has an essential role in this book. Arroyo incourage us to view them as players in a tranformative process. Uranus as an urge toward freedom from the old (Saturn). Neptune dissolving the old. And Pluto the transfomation into a new form (metamorphosis). This way Arroyo establishes a very positve attitude towards ones birthchart as a map of a romantic story of personal developement that has the possibility to play out. The dealing with old karma and the establishment of a new mode for the next life.I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in personal developement using astrology as a method.
I am a huge fan of Evolutionary Astrology, but this book is very difficult to read. The print is very small, and his ideas are so very big and smushed into a very small space. This is definitely one of those books you would take on a professional course, and maybe that's why they edited it the way they did. I'm going to have to read it at least 3-4 times before I completely nail down his theories and ideas. I know it's one of the more major books in the field and one that professionals look to, but I'm an amateur and it was difficult to follow. I give it four stars b/c even though it's a challenging read - I know I'm really going to learn a lot just from the first three chapters I got through.

Stephen Arroyo never disappoints with his insightful interpretations of astrology aspects. This book is not for a rank novice, however, as without a clear understanding of how the different aspects/signs/positions can affect people, it probably won't make much sense. For us "older" amateur astrologists, it presents very good insights and interpretations. In my opinion, he is "spot on."
Excellent, down to earth, insightful book written by one of the best authors there is to learn about what probably is the most sophisticated tool to understand what is.
Sometimes you find a gem, and this is a gemstone! Love this book! Garnered all sorts of informations about meanings of planets in the natal chart and what it can mean for you! Taught me different perspective on astrology and destiny . I constantly read and then looked up my chart and my families charts for illustration of points.
Stephen Arroyo has grasped the true meaning of the birth chart as a guide to our karma in this lifetime. Not a book for the rank beginner and not a cookbook approach to astrology. Arroyo draws from many sources, including C.G. Jung and Edgar Cayce, to draw out the nuggets of understanding. A fascinating book.
