Review
Pham’s watercolor-and-ink illustrations add to the humor by playing with the stereotypes the text exposes. It’s also nice to see Blacky’s considerable skills on display. This third series installment is sure to be popular.—Booklist OnlineWell-executed and very funny.—Kirkus Reviews

My 1st grader asked for this book for Christmas. It's appropriate for her reading level and she loves the sweet story. This book challenges her, but she's able to get through it mostly on her own.
I got this for a struggling third grade reader. She loved it. We read the whole series. Then I brought it home and read it aloud to my five year old daughter who absolutely LOVED them. We read them all (again),Our public library happened to have a Princess in a Black event this summer - my five year old was too excited. We went and she was able to talk all about the books with the "bigger girls".The bright colorful illustrations do assist as context clues. There are also lots of opportunities for predicting/inferring.While this series may not go down in history as great literature of our time - it got two different aged girls (5 & 9) to enjoy reading. That's a success in my eyes! We can't wait for the next book to come out in September!
The Hales have created another winning book with The Princess in Black and the Hungry Bunny Horde. Princess Magnolia presents a tough picture when she dresses up and tackles monsters as the Princess in Black. But she is as susceptible as anyone to cuteness, and the horde of bunnies she faces in this book are utterly adorable. It's funny to read about the goat boy's efforts to convince her that the bunnies aren't as sweet as they are cute, as they devour everything in sight, including a goat horn and a complete tree. But interestingly it isn't the Princess in Black who saves the day, which adds a nice twist to the story. The bunnies scaring off the other monsters is pretty funny as well. Pham, as in the other Princess in Black stories, steals the show with her gorgeous illustrations. A surefire winner for young readers who enjoy princess stories or superhero stories or both. This continues to be one of my favorite series to read and share.
This is a great series of books! My 7 yo daughter loves them, and reads them over and over again. This is the story of a dainty princess whose alter-ego secretly defends the kingdom. The idea of combining a princess and a strong, capable heroine is pure gold for little girls. It is the feminine equivalent to all the super heros (Batman, Superman, etc.) that little boys look up to. My daughter eagerly awaits each new installment impatiently, and devours it as soon as it arrives.I confess that the story line of this third installment, with aliens who look like bunnies, wasn't as compelling as the first two books. At least not to me - but my daughter didn't seem to notice, and that's what matters. Still worth five stars, and highly recommended.
Fun characters. Cute storyline. These books have been inhaled by my 7yo. over and over again. I'd say we have another collection to add to the bookshelf. I'll keep my eyes out for what comes in this series.
My first grade "reluctant reader" loves this series. Super appealing story for kick-ass little girls who are not interested in the other damsels-in-need-of-rescue type princesses. The story is exciting and the full color illustrations are very engaging.
The Princess in Black is my 4 year old's favorite literary character at the moment! She will sit through the entire booking and loves that it has chapters. We have the first 2 books and the 4th is on order. This one is a little bit different than the first because the monsters are actually bunnies.Shannon Hale -- If you read these, thank you for the fun stories and COLOR illustrations!!! For book 5, my little one would love to see the Princess in Black go into Monster Land! And we can't wait to see how Princess Sneezewort plays out :)
My six year old really enjoys The Princess in Black. We have bought all four books that are currently available and are looking forward to the fifth in the series. She likes that they are chapter books with great illustrations. The Princess is an awesome character with grace and charm and a kick butt attitude when needed!
The idea of the monster bunnies was great, but somehow it didn't come together as well as the previous two in the series. Maybe it was the fact that it wasn't the princess herself that resolved the monster problem? I keep having to read my daughter the original two, but she hasn't asked for this one after the first read. I'll still buy any new ones in the series.
